EGYPT TO DEVELOP SIWA OASIS NATURAL RESERVE WITH EGP 70 MILLION

Nestled between the Qattara Depression at the border of Libya, the Siwa Oasis has been officially deemed one of Egypt’s natural reserves since 2002. The urban oasis is home to an isolated community who live in the desert, who speak a unique dialect called Siwi. The Siwa Oasis hosts ethereal salt lakes, over a thousand springs and boasts a range of species like the turtle dove, the endangered slender-horned Gazelle and a wide range of plant species. With all this natural diversity - as well as its archaeological history, having hosted an Oracle of Amun Ra - the Siwa Oasis is perfectly deserving of a development and promotion project by the Ministry of Environment to cement it as part of the Eco Egypt campaign.

The campaign looks to develop 13 natural reserves across the country and turn them into major destinations for ecotourism. With the help of experts in environmental tourism, the project is expected to take a year and a half to complete, with funding somewhere between EGP 50 to 70 million.

Eco Egypt's ambitions may entail some legislative amendments, if a specific law is needed to protect the reserve and its biological diversity. The campaign will rely heavily on the workers on the reserve who are made up of 97% Siwa locals, and who will have an active role in making recommendations on how to implement the project.

EGYPT TO OPEN WORLD’S BIGGEST WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT IN 8 MONTHS

Water scarcity is one of the biggest issues facing the world today, so much so that it has been listed by the World Economic Forum in 2019 as one of the largest global risks in terms of potential detrimental impact over the next decade, and solving the issue is one of the UN’s main millennium development goals. And with that issue nipping at Egypt's heels, it's little wonder that they're looking to host the world’s biggest wastewater treatment plant soon.

The plant has an estimated cost of EGP 18 billion, and is to be connected to the longest drain in Bahr El-Bakar, which spans 106KM in length. The plant will be built in the Bahr El-Bakar area in Sharqia, so that it can treat the area's agricultural wastewater.

This ambitious project is expected to conclude in only 8 months, and is hoped to significantly facilitate millions of Egyptians' access to clean water.

THE UNITED NATIONS' ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMISSION FOR WESTERN ASIA RANKS EGYPT NUMBER ONE AMONG ARAB NATIONS FOR IMPLEMENTING THEIR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Sustainability is a global effort. We all have to come together, as one, to help save the planet from ourselves. It's not a competition! THAT SAID... it's nice to be number one at something. And if the United Nations’ Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is to be believed, Egypt is in first place among Arab nations when it comes to implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), outscoring all the other countries in the region by 50 percent.

To clarify: the report is based on Arab national platforms who keep track of these SDGs, and only nine Arab countries have one of those. Although it's doubtful that a country that doesn't have their fingers on the pulse of their sustainable development is making many tracks in that area.

Egypt was one of the few countries who developed such a platform, which showed over 300 projects valued at about USD 25 billion overall. "Within the portfolio of the Ministry of International Cooperation with development partners, there is a huge number of projects in multiple and vital sectors," Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat said. "These include education, transportation, water desalination, new and renewable energy, entrepreneurship, empowerment of women, and other sectors that serve and work to achieve the 17 UN sustainable development goals."

Recently, the Ministry has been focusing on healthcare as a means to move towards these goals. "With more dialogue between policy makers, international finance and development institutions, private sector and civil society, we will leap forward in maximizing the health of our population as an investment in human capital to achieve the sustainable development goals," Al-Mashat said.

THE RED SEA GOVERNORATE IS ABOUT TO RECEIVE A 2000 MW-CAPACITY WIND POWER COMPLEX

Green energy in Egypt still feels like a new thing, even though - if you look at the numbers - we've really made some strides in renewable energy over the past decade. In 2019-2020 alone, the average output from hydropower was 14,038 gigawatt per hour, while wind energy projects produced an accumulated 4,320 gigawatt per hour. Not to mention the establishment of Benban Solar Park, one of the largest solar parks in the world.

The Red Sea can add another eco-friendly feather in that locally-sourced hat: the governorate is getting a brand new wind power complex with the capacity to produce 2,000 megawatts per hour. The wind farm will increase the general capacity of renewable energy sources to 10,000 megawatts per hour.

As of right now, there are various projects in the works around Egypt that share a total capacity of 2,200 megawatts of wind energy and 520 megawatts of solar energy in total. All this is part Egypt’s Renewable Energy Strategy, where renewable sources will produce 20% of the country’s total energy by 2035 - a long but necessary undertaking for a greener, more sustainable future.

EGYPT WILL LAUNCH 691 NEW GREEN PROJECTS NEXT YEAR

With Egypt becoming more involved in the green sector over the past few years, including building one of the world’s largest solar parks, one wonders if we’ll reach our peak and just stop trying beyond a certain point. We’re just not accustomed to the country being so environmentally conscious in the 21st century - we’ve seen your comments, we know how skeptical we can get - so we’ve got to hit our limit sooner or later, right? Not quite yet - the coming year will see 691 new green projects come into fruition at a cost of EGP447.3 billion.

These projects represent around 14 percent of the budget for the 2021 fiscal plan in public investment. Although that’s already a big number all things considered, that money will actually double in 2022 to 30 percent.

A set of environmental sustainability criteria have been set by the state, meaning that each one of these projects will be working in close alignment with the Ministry of Environment to ensure their practices are up to par.

In addition to the plans for the coming year, Egypt recently launched its first green bond issue on the London Stock Exchange last Thursday. Worth $750 million for the first five years, Egypt’s is the largest green bond in the MENA region.

ZED PARK OPENS ‘ZED EYE’ FERRIS WHEEL FOR AN EPIC VIEW OF CAIRO

Like the London Eye or the Tianjin Eye, the ZED Eye hopes to draw in tourists so they could be carried over the city and see everything the area has to offer.

The ZED Eye will be open at the park everyday from 2 PM to 10 PM. Book your ticket for an extraordinary view of Cairo on tickets.zed-park.com or buy them at the door.

"WHY DO YOU KILL ME?" - FAYOUM ART CENTER HOLDS COMPETITION TO HELP SAVE AND VACCINATE STRAY DOGS

A few days ago, a hotel in the village of Tunis submitted a complaint to Fayoum's government about the stray dogs that live in the area. In response, Fayoum spread poison along the streets, putting down almost 30 stray dogs - and due to the indiscriminate nature of these killings, a number of pets were poisoned as well. Among the dead was a dog who belonged to Ibrahim Abla, director of the Fayoum Art Center, who was driven into action.

"What happened was inhumane," Abla said. "We woke up to a terrible tragedy. Seeing dogs die that way is already difficult enough, and then we lost our family's dog because of it too. I fear that what happened to the dogs in Tunis is nothing but one of an endless series of massacres. That is why we decided to organize this campaign to vaccinate dogs rather than kill them."

Abla launched a huge campaign on social media and throughout Tunis called 'No to Killing, Yes to Vaccination', treating 50 dogs across the village and 20 more with the vets at Fayoum's Youssef Al-Seddik Center. And as an extension of that campaign, the Fayoum Art Center has started a competition called 'Why Do You Kill Me?', inviting artists from anywhere in the world to denounce dog poisonings and killings, and help raise awareness on the importance of vaccination and mercy, through art.

The art centre will accept artworks in any style as long as it's on an A4 or A3-sized canvas, and any number of artworks can be submitted alongside the artist's CV as long as it reaches them before October 5th.

: We like to talk a lot about how precious animals are and how they always need to be protected (and these truths SHOULD be self-evident, but somehow people keep needing to be reminded of them every now and then), so we can’t help but feel the furriest of fuzzies in our hearts when we see stuff like this. This stunning feeding station for stray animals was designed by an anonymous resident of the pictured building in Haram, and during this season of simultaneous crisis and charity it’s great to see a loving hand extended to our local strays. And honestly, if dogs had opposable thumbs they’d totally do the same for us.
