I had the pleasure of meeting Badr two decades ago, and right from the start, a deep friendship and understanding blossomed between us. Badr was renowned as the most celebrated artist in the oases, with a unique talent for creating captivating sand drawings and remarkable sculptures. His home had transformed into an exquisite art gallery, where we cherished our visits, spending countless hours immersed in music and engaging conversations. Badr embodied the spirit of Farafra Oasis, capturing every essence of the oasis, the surrounding desert, and its people through his artwork, which beautifully portrayed the faces of the original inhabitants of Farafra. Siwa Oasis With a population of about 23,000, Siwa, the most inaccessible of all Egypt's oasis until very recently, is also one of the most fascinating, lying some 60 feet below sea level.. On the edge of the Great Sand Sea, its rich history includes a visit from Alexander the Great to consult the Oracle of Amun in 331 BC. Archaeologists, such as Liana Souvaltsis implied that the great military leader was burried here, but no real evidence has come from this. The King of Persia lead a 50,000 man army to the area to distroy the oracle, but the entire army was lost in the desert.

The area has a nice climate, chilly in winter, hot in the summer and moderate in the spring and autumn. Lake Siwa to the west of the town of is a large, saltwater lake.

The area is famous for its dates and olives, and is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Egypt. Olives oil is still made in the area by crushing the olives from the 70,000 olive trees in the area with stones. The dates are gathered by zaggala (stick bearers), who must remain celibate until the age of forty, and the area boasts some 300,000 date trees. It is located on the old date caravan route, yet until recently, it received few other visitors and retained much of its heritage. In fact, until the battles which took place around the oasis in World War II, it was hardly governed by Egypt, and remained mostly a Berber (Zenatiya) community for the prior thirteen centuries. Siwans continue to have their own culture and customs and they speak a Berber language, called Siwi, rather than Arabic. Interestingly, each October there is a three-day festival during which Siwans must settle all of their past year's disputes.

The Osirion is an ancient Egyptian temple located in Abydos, a city in Upper Egypt. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Seti I, who ruled Egypt from 1294 to 1279 BCE, although some scholars suggest that it may be even older.

The Osirion is unique in that it is largely underground, with only a few columns and walls visible above the surface. The temple is dedicated to Osiris, the god of the afterlife, and was likely used for funerary rituals and ceremonies.

The temple is known for its massive granite columns, which are some of the largest in Egypt, and its intricate carvings and reliefs. The walls of the temple are adorned with scenes from the Book of the Dead, a collection of spells and prayers believed to help guide the deceased through the afterlife.

One of the most intriguing features of the Osirion is its unusual stone construction, which includes large, megalithic blocks of stone that are not found elsewhere in Egyptian architecture. Some of these blocks weigh over 100 tons and are among the largest ever used in ancient Egyptian construction.

Among them is a depiction that resembles a helicopter, UFO, and submarine. While some have interpreted these hieroglyphs as evidence of ancient aliens, the truth is that the "helicopter" image is the result of carved stone being re-used over time. The initial inscription was made during the reign of Seti I and later re-carved during the reign of Ramesses II. The result is a unique palimpsest-like effect of overlapping hieroglyphs that create a fascinating display. In the Western Desert of Egypt, the story of Zarzura has captured the imagination of explorers, adventurers, and treasure hunters for decades.

According to legend, Zarzura was a lush oasis located somewhere in the Western Desert, filled with water, date palms, and other vegetation. The oasis was said to be guarded by a tribe of fierce warriors, and only the most skilled and daring explorers could find it. Over the years, many expeditions have been launched to search for Zarzura, but none have been successful in locating it.

Some historians believe that the legend of Zarzura may have originated from a real oasis that existed in the Western Desert but was lost over time due to a changing climate and desertification. Others believe that it may have been a myth created by ancient travelers to discourage others from venturing too far into the desert.

Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the search for Zarzura continues to captivate adventurers and explorers to this day. Today, modern technology such as satellite imagery and GPS have made it easier to search for lost oases and other hidden treasures in the desert, but the mystery of Zarzura remains unsolved.
Searching for the lost oasis (Zarzura) is a dream shared by most explorers of the Western Desert to the extent that a special club was established in 1930, called the Zarzura Club. The founder of the club, Ralph Bagnold, gathered a group of explorers and adventurers who immersed themselves in desert travel using early cars and planes, searching for the lost oases of the desert and the ancient cities of vanished civilizations. In fact, they were drawing maps of the desert for military and espionage reasons. Club members came from countries that would soon become enemies: England and the Allied forces against Italy and Germany. When the war broke out in 1939, Ralph Bagnold founded the British Long Range Desert Group for espionage and to impede Rommel's progress in Cairo, while his club colleague, Hungarian Count Almasy, succeeded in placing German spies there. In the end, the British emerged victorious.

One such place is the White Desert in Egypt - an otherworldly landscape with unique rock formations carved by wind and sand over millions of years.
