Habiba Organic Farm (HOF) Greening our desert with organic food. protecting our environment promoting Agritourism and looking for responsible tourism. It is a community project

God created the Earth and provided us with the means to live on and fill it with goodness. Since 1982, tourism was the main approach used to develop Sinai because it was the easiest and fastest activity that could provide a source of income for Egyptians and attract them to live and work there. Habiba was started in 1994 as a touristic enterprise in a central location on the sea, at Nuweba city and, with God’s blessings, it became one of the most famous tourist sites at the time because of its outstanding location on the sea and its restaurant that used to bring visitors from Dahab, Taba, Sharm el-Sheikh, and Saint Catherine. With the start of the tourism crisis in 2004, we understood what a weak activity tourism is after God closed this easy way for us to live from the earth. And the result was that it taught us how to accept each other despite our differences. After tourism dried up and the earth emptied, we discovered that this soil upon which thousands of tourists tread is far more valuable than the gold that they spent to come here. So we created Habiba Farm in 2007 and began to learn how to cultivate the earth organically and take nourishment from its blessings. After eight years since the founding of Habiba Organic Farm, we’ve learned how to use our differences for good. And today, more than 8,400 square meters in southeastern Sinai are undergoing organic cultivation at the hands of the local residents, with the aim of restoring and developing the earth, and each day there are new developments. Habiba, a Social Project Born in Nuweiba:

Habiba aims to open new horizons in self sufficiency for the people of Nuweiba, Sinai, and all of Egypt, by using the existing natural resources for organic agriculture and encouraging responsible tourism that conserves and supports the natural areas and opens doors for people to get to know different environments and cultures. The Habiba community respects and encourages diversity, as each individual has a unique role by which he is able to benefit others and himself. If people truly believe in this principle from their hearts, integration and fulfillment will be achieved among all creatures and members of society. And through people’s active participation and cooperation with the aim of the individual and common good, goodness will return to everyone, despite their different approaches and specializations. And through Habiba’s programs, activities, and workshops, you can get to know more about the project and how to be a part of it

It is January. I will be giving my staff their annual salary increase although it won't come anywhere near what they will need to deal with the inflation and the rise in the costs of living. The feed for the animals has risen in the past year to being double the costs, and if we want to keep them healthy we can't ignore this.

The entry fee for the farm has been LE 150 per person with children under 5 for free for ages and as much as I hate increasing the cost, especially since the cost of transport to come here has increased so much, I have to raise it to LE 200 per person. This INCLUDES the half hour horseback ride, the donkey cart ride, and tea, Nescafé, and water and use of the barbecues if visitors want them.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own food, whether prepared or for grilling and the use of the grills and charcoal is free. If people want to order a lunch from us it is a full meal with chicken, rice or pasta, cooked vegetables (Mariam makes an amazing vegan molokheya!) salad, and fruit. Visitors are welcome to bring their own beverages and snacks since everything we offer is freshly prepared from the local produce of the area. Other than the meat dish, everything is either vegetarian or often vegan.

Al Sorat is a family farm where we want people to feel at home to engage with our animals and the nature in our gardens. We also host activities from Nawaya, and other groups, offer school programs, birthday parties, space for group or business meeting and activities, and a chance to play with photography or research.

We have well-trained, vaccinated, friendly dogs at the farm who are delighted with the arrival of visitors, providing a dog fix for people who can't have dogs in their homes. A rent-a-dog service if you will. In addition, with over 40 years of experience in living with a pack of about a dozen dogs from a variety of backgrounds, I am happy to discuss the pros and cons that arise in the contemplation of finding a family dog. We are NOT a rescue, nor do we breed dogs, but the farm is a great chance to see what interactions with dogs are like or to learn to be more comfortable around animals. I have had many visitors who arrange to come because their children love animals and they want to learn how to relax around them. We offer a free gentle therapy.

We can send more detailed information and location on WhatsAppp. Prior reservations are necessary if food is involved.

FOOD SECURITY IN THE DESERT

Habiba Community is located in Nuweiba, an Egyptian town in a strip of land between the mountains of the Sinai Desert and the Gulf of Aqaba. In a desert climate, from semi-arid to arid, the average rainfall is 30mm a year.

For the past 29 years, Habiba Community has been committed to providing food security and enhancing the resilience of the indigenous communities of Sinai to better face the impacts of climate change. To do so, Habiba Organic Farm (Habiba Organic Farm (HOF)) was established in 2007 with the goal of restoring the desert degraded soil to make it fertile again.

In the latest issue of Permaculture magazine, PM118, Giulia Carrabino tells the story of Habiba, how they are reversing desertification, providing food security and creating a tourism centre that teaches visitors regenerative and permaculture techniques.

PM118 is out now. Get your copy with a subscription and receive FREE digital access to the archives AND a 25% discount code for all our permaculture titles.

🖼️ The past week the Noorderlicht Photo Festival at the Museum Belvedere (Heerenveen, The Netherlands) started!

🏜️ Among the inspiring exhibitions, the "New Horizon Initiative - Elysian Desert, 2023" gives the viewers a glimpse of how the landscape would be if animals and plants were in charge!

🐝 The photographers, Dirk-Jan Visser and Gus Drake analyze the interests of non-human life in the landscapes since the rights of nature carry as much weight as those of humans.

🏞️ The work is supported by artificial intelligence that creates an imaginary landscape that considers the interests of local flora and fauna.

💪🏼 The New Horizon Initiative was launched at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh in November 2022 and helps policymakers and CEOs recognize the interests of non-human life in their management models, showing alternative scenarios.

👏🏼 During COP27 one of the photographers, Dirk-Jan, became aware of Habiba Community so he decided to come back with his wife and their kids in May and spend 2 weeks with us. 🥰

✌🏼 In this way, the landscape surrounding Habiba and Nuweiba became part of his photography project! 💚

💚 Honored to be part of this promising project and to work together in the future! 🌱

🌱Today’s focus is on the Jojoba plant (Simmondsia chinensis) 🌱

🪴The jojoba plant is a hearty, perennial plant that grows spontaneously in North America 🙌🏼

🪴 Not only it thrives in the harsh, desert conditions that could kill most living things, but it also produces oil-rich nuts with many healing properties 💪🏼

🪴Jojoba plant is a good choice for times of drought. The leaves stand vertically, so that only the tips are exposed to the hot sun. They have a waxy cuticle that cuts down on water loss and the tap roots descend deep into the earth in search of water 👏🏼

🪴 Jojoba oil has a similar molecular structure and composition to sebum, which the skin naturally produces as moisturizer 👍🏼

🪴 Jojoba is applied directly to the skin for acne, psoriasis, sunburn, and chapped skin. It is also used topically to encourage the regrowth of hair in people who are balding 🙌🏼

🌱 We have just established a small plot that will function as a nursery for the jojoba sprouts at the Habiba Regenerative Farm/Learning Center 🌱

💚 Thanks to our volunteers we are expanding our knowledge on natural oils as bio fertilizers and bio pesticides 💚

💚 5 months have passed and the day to say goodbye has arrived! 🥹

🌱Irene has finished her internship at Habiba and after these months of data collection and implementing practices around the community, she is ready to go back to The Netherlands and back to for her MA graduation! 👏🏼

🥰 We are so grateful to have had this incredible human being with us! 💚

🧑‍🌾 She has dedicated all her energies and skills to this project until the very end, and she delivered an inspiring farm-design in which she applied many permaculture practices but also experimented with agricultural innovations!💪🏼

🌱 The Habiba family wish her all the best for the next months and years to come! 💚

🌞 The spring Equinox has hit our farms and our fields are full of colorful flowers 🌞

🌸 Alternating flowers and crops is always a good idea! Why?

🌼 Because certain types of flowers, like for example Calendula or Sanflowers help against pests 💪🏼

🌸 Because two or more interacting flowers species in a given area create a more complex habitat that can support a wider variety of fauna, including pollinators 🙌🏼

💚 Go to our Link in Bio to know how we are greening the desert 💚
