#ذكريات | إكتشف تاريخ بورسعيد: بصمة اليونانيين في حفر قناة السويس
هل تعلم أن الآلاف من اليونانيين شاركوا في حفر قناة السويس؟ في عام 1859م، بدأ حفر القناة تحت إشراف فرديناند ديليسبس، رئيس الشركة العالمية لقناة السويس البحرية، الذي كان بحاجة إلى عمّال مهرة للمشاركة في هذا العمل الشاق.
🔍 التعاون اليوناني:
رئيس الجالية اليونانية بالقاهرة آنذاك اقترح على ديليسبس استقطاب سكان الجزر اليونانية القريبة من مصر، مثل رودس وكاسوس. هؤلاء السكان كانوا يمتلكون خبرة بحرية، مما سيساعد في إدارة القناة بعد إتمام حفرها.
📈 الوصول إلى بورسعيد:
استجاب ديليسبس، وفتح الباب أمام العمالة اليونانية، حيث وصل 4 آلاف يوناني إلى منطقة العمل، معظمهم من جزيرة كاسوس التي كانت تعاني من أوضاع اقتصادية صعبة.
⚠️ ظروف العمل:
خاض جميع الحفارين هذا التحدي في ظروف معيشية مأساوية، تمثلت في نقص المياه وارتفاع الحرارة وانتشار بعض الأوبئة. بعد انتهاء العمل في القناة، واصل عدد من اليونانيين العمل في شركة القناة كمرشدين بحريين ومهندسين.
🏙️ مدينة بورسعيد:
عندما سمع اليونانيون أن ديليسبس ينوي إقامة مدينة جديدة بالقرب من القناة، طلبوا تسميتها "كاسوس الجديدة"، لكن الاقتراح رُفض وتم اشتقاق اسم المدينة من الوالي سعيد باشا، فحملت اسم "بورسعيد".
🌍 الهوية اليونانية:
مثل العاملون في الشركة النواة الصلبة للجالية اليونانية التي عاشت في بورسعيد. عاش اليونانيون كأغلبية وأكسبوا المدينة طابعًا يونانيًا انعكس على الكثير من أبنيتها المعمارية. كما شاركوا في التجارة والصناعة وافتتح أشهر الأطباء اليونانيين عيادات خاصة.
🚢 المرشدون اليونانيون:
رفض المرشدون اليونانيون التخلي عن مواقعهم بعد تأميم القناة في 26 يوليو 1956، وكان هذا موقفًا مشرفًا لهم. كما شارك بعضهم في العمليات الفدائية ضد العدوان الثلاثي.
🏠 الرحيل عن بورسعيد:
استمر اليونانيون في ممارسة حياتهم في بورسعيد حتى عام 1969، حينما قررت الدولة تهجير أهل بورسعيد إجبارياً. غادر اليونانيون بورسعيد بحسرة، ولا يزال بعضهم يزور المدينة سنويًا.

Discover the History of Port Said: The Greek Influence in the Suez Canal Construction
Did you know that thousands of Greeks participated in the construction of the Suez Canal? In 1859, the canal was excavated under the supervision of Ferdinand de Lesseps, the head of the Suez Canal Company, who needed skilled workers to join the Egyptian laborers in this tough job.
🔍 Greek Collaboration:
The head of the Greek community in Cairo at the time suggested to de Lesseps to recruit inhabitants from nearby Greek islands, such as Rhodes and Kasos. These residents had maritime experience that would help manage the canal once completed.
📈 Arrival in Port Said:
De Lesseps responded and opened the door for Greek laborers, with 4,000 Greeks arriving at the work site, most of whom came from the economically struggling island of Kasos.
⚠️ Working Conditions:
All the laborers faced this challenge under dire living conditions, including water shortages, high temperatures, and the spread of diseases. After the canal was completed, many Greeks continued to work in the canal company as marine pilots and engineers.
🏙️ The City of Port Said:
When the Greeks heard that de Lesseps intended to establish a new city near the canal, they requested to name it "New Kasos," but the proposal was rejected, and the city was named "Port Said," after the Governor Said Pasha.
🌍 Greek Identity:
The workers represented the core of the Greek community that lived in Port Said. They lived as a majority and endowed the city with a Greek character reflected in much of its architecture. They also engaged in trade and industry, with many of the most renowned Greek doctors opening their own clinics.
🚢 Greek Pilots:
Greek pilots refused to relinquish their positions after the nationalization of the canal on July 26, 1956, showcasing their pride and that of their country. Some participated in resistance operations against the British and French during the tripartite aggression.
🏠 Departure from Port Said:
Greeks continued their lives in Port Said until 1969, when the state decided to forcibly evacuate its residents. The Greeks left Port Said with great sorrow, and some still visit the city every year.
