We cover all the major Denominaciones de Origen or wine appellations in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. Rías Baixas (Val do Salnés, Val do Ulla, Soutomaior, Condado do Tea and O Rosal), D.O. Monterrei, D.O. Ribeira Sacra and D.O. In neighbouring Castilla & León we have the wonderful Bierzo region and Mencía wines which are winning fans the world over. For those interested in the Portugues
e version of Albariño, the Melgaço-Monçao Alvarinho area is well worth a visit. Well off-the-beaten-track visits to furanchos, tiny vineyard-bar-restaurants licensed to sell their cosecha propia wines for only three months of the year (March-June), are a fabulous insight into the Galician home cooking and local wine-making traditions.

Octopus empanada with this Val do Salnés Caiño tinto from D'Arvelos in Vilalonga (Sanxenxo). Before the Albariño boom happened, this grape reigned supreme in the region. More on D'Arvelos in come October.
Alan garnacheando in the Kingdom of Aragon.
Our Catalan correspondent, Alan Nance, is rewarded for a (virtual) trip across the border into Aragon

Saúde, salud, sláinte, cheers!
Con el cierre de Durán, siempre nos queda Carmen de Germán, best chourizos & longanizas in the land. Who needs signage?
Bill Bolloten reviews the definitive guide to the complex and diverse world of sherry wines.
Splendid zorza and cuttlefish and chips as always at La Marieta, Cedeira.
Can't enough of these Trebujena (Cádiz) 'pasto' wines. Another cracker from JF Pulido
was our first lunch out after confinement in June 2020. It’s taken us a while to get back given that gastronomically there’s so much happening in Coruña. That said, on Thursday, on the spur of the moment, we called in and managed to get a table. Veigamoura by Antonio Alonso Escudero (Rías Baixas-Condado do Tea) is a fabulous wine to have with lubina (European seabass) and the spuds were something else. Must ask for the recipe. The avocado with chimichurri also fabulous, as were the puddings.
On this day 11 years ago we spent a morning in Arnoia and Leiro in company of Emilio Rojo. Anglo-Scots-Gallego friendships were forged, the 2012 vintage and megapeaty Isla single malts were tasted, and needless to say, lots of laugh were had. Xa choveu! .gordon.566

Magnificent selection from Fani featuring the splendidly niche wines of Iago Garrido (Cenlle, Ribeiro), Gutier Seijo (ex oenologist at Dominio do Bibei that sources grapes from both sides of the Miño/Minho) and Begoña Troncoso, a biodynamic viticultora based in Arbo of Rías Baixas. We finished off with a very special vermouth from the chaps at Barbadillo in Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
No es donde nace la vaca, sino de donde pace. España Campeones de Europa 2024. Merecidísima e indiscutible victoria!! 🇪🇦👏
Spotted myself in this pic. I was bending the ear of one of my favourite Ribeira Sacra producers based in the Chantada subzone. One of the those places where in the still of the night, you might hear, in the words of Van Morrison, ancient voices calling ‘children, children’, chiefly because the vineyard sits on what was once a Celtic hill-fort. La hostia.
Loved the wines of too. Jeréz de la Frontera, key players in the revival of vinos de pasto i.e. unfortified Palomino Two years ago at the Emoción dos Viños in Oia, their stand was among the last ones we visited, and we were suffering a little from tasting burnout. I made damned sure I got there earlier this year. Great people, great wine.
What can one say about this guy that's not been said already? Yet again, the passion comes across loud & clear.
The future's bright for winemaking in the Marina Alta de Alicante with young guns like
When you play your Soul, Funk, Disco, R&B, early Reggae vinyl at an artisanal wine and craft beer event in the city and your host, by way of thanks, presents you with a case of these beauties afterwards, I just have say...Take it right on to the bridge, man, take it on to the bridge!!
Heads up also for these young guys who are takin' it right on to the bridge at on the Camino de Santiago. Particularly love the label on this white blend of Godello and from memory, Branco Lexítimo. Made in Cabanas de San Fiz, Ribeira Sacra. Top notch tintos too!!
Another banger from yesterday.
Loved the unfortified 'pasto' wines from Trebujena-Cádiz viticultor
The ancestral sparkler Tarbissana was something else. Definitely on our must visit list next time we're down south, even more so after our frustrated trip in May.
Always a pleasure to speak to dynamic young winemakers starting out in what
is commonly held to be Spain's oldest demarcated wine region (Ordenanzas Municipales de Ribadavia of 1579) in Castrelo do Miño perfectly fits the bill with 2023 being their very first vintage. More on these guys to come in
Real pleasure to finally meet these guys today. Another arrow in the best of the Ribeira Sacra tour quiver.

Festas da Patrona Cedeira, no 17° for me. Profoundly moving, even though I'm not religious in any way today.
Racking in progress at @lariojaaltasa This is the process of transferring wine from one barrel to another. The shout of OK at the end was our guide Rocío moving 20 of us on to the next area of the winery. The tasting was fine, although 20 people are perhaps a little too many for the actual size of the room. You couldn’t swing a cat in there.
First visit to the new Tienda-Restaurante @amundina in C/del Padre Feijoo. All very good, including the famous bocata de cigalas or langoustine roll (18€). We drank Eidos de Salgosa (Rías Baixas - O Rosal) by the @cazapitas boys, a lively coupage of loureiro, albariño, cagarrucho & caiño blanco. Second bottle was El Paraguas Atlántico 2020 by the @bodegaselparaguas boys, a top notch Ribeiro that in the absence of a pic didn't must be mentioned in dispatches. Lighting in the place somewhat subdued so the pics aren't quite my best effort. A lovely triple sweet of sweet wines to close the proceedings. We'll definitely be back.
Not all food and wine. Detroit Soul par excellence from 1967, Jimmy 'Soul' Clark on Soul Hawk, an imprint of the long defunct Palmer Records. Guarda a fe!!
