The Tabernas Desert, one of the 25 most beautiful landscapes in Spain
There is no doubt that the landscape beauty of Almería shines in abundance. From the natural charm that emerges from the depths, from the magic of its most remote villages to the most uneven urban landscape whose charm lies in the eyes of the beholder. And although there would be dozens of places that could suggest being the best option for a well-deserved rest, this time it is the turn of the Tabernas Desert (probably, again), declared a Protected Natural Area since 1989.
According to the newspaper Libertad Digital, in commemoration of World Nature Day, the desert landscape is among the 25 most beautiful landscapes in Spain. It is true that this environment is not without reason, since the Tabernas Desert has little to envy to others in the world such as the Atacama Desert in Chile; that of Uyuni in Bolivia; that of Nubia in Sudan; Karakum in Turkmenistan; the Mojave in California; Wadi Rum in Jordan; or La Guajira in Colombia. Of course, each one with its beauty and peculiarities that make each one unique and special.
With a population of about 4,000 inhabitants, Tabernas has a wide range of pensions, hostels and rural houses in the municipality, some of the closest ones being Camping Fort Bravo, Jardín del Desierto, Hostal Avenida, Hostal el Puente and Finca Madreselva. B&B. As if that were not enough, gastronomy is not far behind, since the gastronomy of the area is very varied: innkeepers, migas, porridge, soaking, wheat.
Flora, fauna and climate
For those who do not know it, it is located between the Sierras de los Filabres and Alhamilla, north of the city of Almería, with a total area of 11,448.49 hectares. This natural area is considered the only desert area on the European continent, and its landscape and geological interest are also of great importance.
As for fauna, the Tabernas Desert was declared a Special Protection Area for Birds. The trumpeter finch and the royal swift stand out, which can be observed, above all, in the Captive area. Lizards, lizards and toads are also frequent.
Regarding the climate, temperatures range between 16ºC and 20ºC on average, due to the low altitude and proximity to the sea. Even in summer, it has reached 40ºC. And as for rainfall, they are usually around 240 mm per year.
Theme park 'Oasys MiniHollywood'
And although it is a full-fledged getaway towards a direct connection with nature, it would be a bad option not to contemplate going to the theme park that is located in the desert.
Oasys MiniHollywood has a large zoological reserve with more than 800 animals of 200 species, a swimming pool area, events, guided tours and workshops for children.
Within the activities offered by the park, there are numerous routes and guided tours lasting 45 minutes. The Oasys route, to discover mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles; the Okavango, where they can discover endangered species; the Savannah route, perfect for seeing zebras or giraffes. And of course, the MiniHollywood route, the perfect excuse to discover the western film history that has passed through Tabernas.
