Guide Tim has spent the weekend doing a final recce for our hotly anticipated Two Deserts Gravel Tour.

The tour takes in the Gorafe and Tabernas Deserts by way of the Sierra de los Filabres and involves four days of extremely varied riding.
•
Tim decided to combine the recce with a kit test for his upcoming Iberian Epic in January. Over to him:
•
There were a couple of sections of the route for the Two Deserts that needed finalising, and I thought I'd ride the entire route over three days and camp out for two nights. The recce was brilliant, and the routes are now sorted and ready for the trip in a couple of weeks. Hurrah!
•
A few kit thoughts:
bags were awesome.
My Hennessy hammock is a revelation: super light, comfortable, and thunderstorm proof (first night weather was biblical).
I do NOT like seat rockets, and I can't wait for my Spider rack and packs to arrive (thanks so much, Kevan & Paddy).

I've always dreamed of riding around the entire Iberian Peninsula. I plan to ride mostly on gravel and quiet roads. I'm going to travel as light as possible, mix camping with hotels, and try and average 150kms per day. It should take about 22 days.
•
Between now and the departure date, I'm going to be focusing on one of my absolute favourite things...the KIT!! 😁
•
🚲 The bike is sorted. It's my trusty Canyon: a converted hardtail with drop bars and my beloved fork.
•
⛺️ I really like the look of the Hubba Hubba.
•
🧳 Luggage is a challenge as I'm not a fan of seat rockets, so the with panniers for the storage and carrying might be the solution.
•
For all you ultra cyclists out there: what do you think? Are there any 'must takes' that you'd recommend?
•
And I can't think of a good, punchy name for the trip, so any suggestions would be very welcome.

Guide Tim was out in the hills on a training session today.
•
Training for an event, he does a mixture of long rides and tailored sessions from coach .
•
Over to Tim:
•
Today was the '30 minute, race pace' brute.
30 minutes doesn't sound that long, but time is not consistent 😳.
Today's session involves a 20 minute warm up, 30 minutes at, or preferably over my Functional Threshold Power (FTP), and then a gentle ride home.
•
The first 10 minutes of the effort is about finding a rhythm, trying to relax and looking anywhere but the timer.
At the end of the 10 minutes, it's time to ask the famous Chris Boardman time trial question: 'Can you maintain this for the duration?'
If the answer is yes, then you're not going hard enough.
If the answer is no, then you're overdoing it.
The correct answer is: I don't know.
•
The second 10 minutes is, for me, almost entirely mental. Time almost stops. I try to clear my head for a minute or two, only to look at the computer and find only 10 seconds have passed. Every dip under the target number seems to need a huge effort to get back to the average required. Brutal.
•
The final 10 minutes is grim.
If I'm below my target after 20 minutes, then it's all I can do not to give up. I'm going to be disappointed anyway, so why bother?
But if I'm on or over target, then I have to keep going, and everything becomes physical. My back hurts, my head is going to explode, my calves are separating from my shins...etc etc.
•
And then it's over. A pootle home and back to work. 😬
•

Yesterday, guide Tim did a highly scientific comparison (😉) between his gravel bike and his race mtb.
•
Over a 27.6 km section of gravel used by the UCI for part of the Gravel World Series, he did a test to see which was actually the best tool for the job.
•
The gravel bike is a converted hardtail with drop bars, 700x45 tyres, and a Lauf fork. It weighs about 10kgs.
The mtb is a Trek Top Fuel FS with flat bars, 2.2 tyres, and a dropper post. It weighs about 11kgs.
•
This was not about 'fun' or 'lifestyle' or 'vibe', but simply to see, with the same power output, which bike covered the distance more quickly.
•
The mtb was faster.
Approximately 1 minute faster on the climb and 2 minutes faster on the descent.
•
Tim says:

I think there were two distinct differences...

The first was grip. Up and down, over loose terrain, the Trek held its line and was a much more stable platform.

The second was tension. Because of its suspension and dropper post, it was possible to relax on the Trek whilst riding the bumpier stuff and particularly whilst descending. This allowed for far more effective recovery, and, yes, fun. 😁
•
My gravel bike has relatively big tyres and a short travel suspension fork, so without these, the difference would likely have been even more pronounced.
•
The gravel bike is a marvel for general, mixed terrain riding, backpacking, commuting, training, and just getting out there, but...
If you have a number on the front and race a typical gravel race course...

Your Pure Mountains guides, Tim and Jenny, had a busman's holiday on Sunday! We headed over to the north side of the mountains to race in the Valle de Alhama half marathon in Purullena, in the badlands.
•
The course was 42km, with 900m of climbing and was an outstanding mix of dirt roads and singletrack, with astonishing views. It was part of the provincial series, so all the keen racers turned up. It was brilliantly organised and marshalled.
•
Tim came third in a strong field of male Master 50s. Jenny came first in the female Master 50s. It would be nice if some more 50s women raced, but there were lots in the women's 40s, so they're in the pipeline! Jenny retains the series leader's jersey 😁.

Guide Jenny won her category this evening at the IX Desafío Vale MTB half marathon in Dúrcal near Granada.

It was a very hot and fast track with a monster climb and lots of gnarly singletrack. She completed the 41k in less than 3hrs and currently leads the 10 race, Circuito de Granada series. ¡¡¡Enhorabuena!!!

Amongst other goodies, she won a leg of jamón de serrano, which is going to be regifted, sharpish 😉

Guide Jenny is riding the komoot Women's Badlands Rally with her friend and occasional Pure Mountains guide, Tatiana Broman, and 70 other women from around the world. They're tackling a 700km route, which more or less follows the mythical Badlands race track.

What an emotional day.
I've been struggling with a back problem for months and there were many times that racing again seemed inconceivable.
But I had help from a brilliant physio: Matt Hpkins and slowly things improved to the point where I could train properly again.
•
Today's ride went pefectly. I felt strong all the way round, the bike was faultless and I rode with some really excellent riders.
I'm very, very happy 😁
•

In April, guide Jenny and friend @tatianabroman joined ultra-endurance rider @laelwilcox and 70 others for the Komoot Women’s Badlands Rally. @Komoot published a 681km route based on the venerated @badlandscc ultracycling race course (not far from Pure Mountains!), but a bit shorter and with “only” 12,000m of climbing. Over to Jenny… “What an adventure! We pedalled from the city of Granada through forests, badlands, deserts, mountains, and coastal paths. Riding all day, every day for a week, with nothing to worry about except climbing and descending, eating and sleeping was like being in Wonderland. Well, I did have to worry about stuffing all my kit into slightly inadequate bags each morning…seat rocket, anyone?! Storms early on led to riders becoming dispersed. The organisers suggested some shortcuts and a rest day. We took some of the shortcuts, re-routed slightly, using the Komoot route planner, and carried on. Partly because we didn’t want to stop and partly because we had booked hotels, which were heavenly at the end of each exhausting day. Table, chair, bed, shower, washing machine: simple pleasures! It was very satisfying to find we were able to ride long, consecutive days and to keep (mostly) smiling. My highlights: • Discovering new landscapes and villages and fitting them together with those I already knew was fascinating. Komoot was a brilliant tool for this, though it did puzzle us occasionally. • The hypnotic joy of endless hours of pedalling, with all its highs and lows. • Riding with a good friend, making decisions together, laughing, talking nonsense and discussing whether we would ever take on the “real” Badlands. • Finally riding the rally, after weeks of preparation. Huge thanks to Badlands for dreaming up this adventure and generously sharing it with us; to Komoot for organising and funding the rally; to the team on the ground who kept the show on the road and to the other riders who made it such an experience.” If

CROSS COUNTRY RACING IS "FUN"! Guides Tim and Jenny had a big night yesterday... We entered a round of the Granada province MTB half marathon series. It was in Dúrcal, on the western edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Wow, it was hard! 41km with 966m of climbing. It started at 6pm on a warm evening, and everyone took off like scalded cats. Some of the route was on sandy gravel (everyone's favourite surface 😉) and there was some amazing singletrack. We both went through the usual racing highs and lows: from "Wow, this is amazing and I am riding like a genius" to "God, I'm not going to finish this race before I explode". Tim came second in the male master 50s. Jenny was the fastest (and only) female master 50 😉. Why aren't there more 50s women racing? Fantastic prizes and a great atmosphere in the paddock. It's so inspiring to get in amongst fanatical riders and see what you can do!
