The shortest night of the year is upon us! In Barcelona, we celebrate this with our Revetlla de Sant Joan, AKA “Nit del Foc” (literally: night of fire), a public holiday known for parties, fireworks and a fantastic atmosphere. Fireworks are also set off in the streets – and so we close for two days to watch from a safe distance!!
Saturday morning sees the *195th* parade through the Sant Antoni neighbourhood for the “Tres Tombs” (10.30am, Paral·lel & C/ Tamarit). Dating back to the 1400s this three-lap procession celebrates farmers, domestic animals & their Patron Saint: Saint Anthony Abbot. Watch horses, ponies, donkeys, mules and more stroll by, as well as locals bringing their pets to be anointed by holy water at L’Escola Pia Sant Antoni Church (Ronda de Sant Pau 72). Thank you, farmers, thank you, animals! Y’all make local Catalan cuisine pretty top notch!
This weekend why not enjoy a pork festival – yes you read right! The latest addition to the annual Sant Antoni festivities in the Clot neighbourhood of Barcelona is a celebration of pig meat! St Anthony was after all the patron saint of domesticated animals and farmers… Sat 18 Jan: head to the Plaza del Mercado del Clot from 11am onwards for kids’ activities, tapas tastings and general merriment, and in the evening (8.30pm) a very special correfoc (“fire-run”) with pigs! Now this is a cultural event that surely cannot be rivalled. Oink oink!
