The Gothic Quarter used to be a Roman village but it has become a huge attraction for tourists and locals alike.
â €
This area of the city is a great place to explore but know that with all the small alleyways, it is easy to get lost.
â €
Simply by walking around this area there is so much to take in. The city as a whole has amazing architecture and detail. In the larger squares it is common to find street performers playing music.
â €
It is the unique opportunities and sights that this part of the city offers which makes it the cultural hub of the city and a first choice for many visitors to Barcelona.

Another curious fact about Barcelona. La Rambla in Barcelona is actually five streets, not one!!

Undoubtedly the most famous street in Barcelona, La Rambla stretches from the Mirador de Colom on the waterfront to the grandiose Plaça Catalunya.

Often referred to in the singular ‘La Rambla’, this large boulevard is actually made up of five different streets: Rambla de Canaletes, Rambla dels Estudis, Rambla de Sant Josep, Rambla dels Caputxins and the Rambla de Santa Mònica.

Another curious fact about the streets is that once upon a time it used to be an open stream, designed to filter water from the mountains surrounding Barcelona to the sea.

Do you know there were no beaches in Barcelona until the 1992 Olympics!!!

Voted one of the best beach cities in the world by the National Geographic just a few years ago, Barcelona didn’t actually have any beaches until the early 90s.

Ahead of the 1992 Olympics, the town council set about the creation of an artificial beach from the tip of the Barceloneta to Poblenou.

Until then, the waterfront had been a rocky wasteland, home to a few fishermen’s houses and huts.

The Eiffel Tower was nearly built in Barcelona!!! The architect Gustave Eiffel originally pitched his proposal for Paris’s iconic tower to the city of Barcelona.

However, local officials rejected the proposal, as they believed the tower would be an unsightly addition to the city’s landscape.

Eiffel then turned to Paris to pitch his idea and they eventually agreed to house the landmark, originally destined to be a temporary exhibit.

Did you know that Barcelona has 12 abondoned metro stations , and they are haunted!

Usually Barcelona's architecture and good climate attracts many tourists. However, mysticism has become somewhat of a tourist draw.

Today in Barcelona, there are 12 abandoned stations between subway and commuter trains, and more and more fans of adventure and mystery come to Barcelona to visit these Ghost Metro stations.

In 2011, a special scary metro tour started that went through the Lau Pau and Sagrada Familia Line.

What was unique about this tour was that it ventured through the abandoned "Gaudí" station, where many people have sworn they've seen shadows and shapes of ghosts.

If you are brave enough, you can enjoy this amazing scary tour and learn more about Barcelona's haunted metro stations.
