🎄 Meet Caga Tió: A Unique Catalan Christmas Tradition 🎄
In Catalonia, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without the charming tradition of Caga Tió (or “Tió de Nadal”)! This colorful wooden log, often painted with a smiling face and wearing a traditional red Catalan hat, is much more than just a festive decoration. It’s an important part of Christmas celebrations for families across the region.
🪵 What is Caga Tió?
The name translates to “Pooping Log” (yes, you read that right!), and it’s both a playful and magical element of Catalan culture. The tradition begins on December 8th (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception), when families bring out the log and “feed” it daily with small treats or fruits, covering it with a blanket to keep it warm.
🎁 When and how is it used?
On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, the fun begins! Children gather around the log, armed with sticks, and take turns singing a traditional song while gently tapping the log. The most well-known verse includes:
“Caga Tió, caga torró, avellanes i mató!”
(Translation: “Poop, log, p**p nougat, hazelnuts, and cheese!”)
Once the song ends, children lift the blanket to find that Caga Tió has “p**ped” small gifts or sweets, delighting everyone with its surprises.
✨ Why is it special?
Caga Tió symbolizes generosity, community, and the joy of giving during the holidays. It’s a beloved tradition that brings families together in laughter and celebration.
