This year is the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes. For some years he was a tax collector in our nearby town of Vélez-Málaga. To celebrate, the streets have been painted with quotes from Don Quijote which refer to the town

"¡Gracias sean dadas a Dios, señores, que a tan buena parte nos ha conducido! Porque si yo no me engaño, la tierra que pisamos es la de Vélez Málaga".

"Thanks be to God, sirs, for bringing us to such good quarters; for, if I do not deceive myself, the ground we stand on is that of Velez Malaga!”

Eight “superwines” for less than 3 euros – what’s not to like?

The Spanish publication “Supervinos” publishes a list of the best wines to be found in supermarkets and high street stores as judged by a panel of experts. The author points out that much of the sale price of wine is to do with marketing, packaging and demand and there’s lots of good stuff to be had amongst the less expensive ranges. The 2016 edition includes the following eight highly rated wines for under 3 euros. What’s not to like?

Cata Regia Reserva 2010 (Red) € 2.60

This is how David Baird describes our little corner of Andalucía

“East of Málaga lies a spectacular area of mountainous country sprinkled with ancient sunbleached villages where 21st century hustle still seems a long way away. This wedge of Málaga province is known as the Axarquía”

Málaga Carnival Week
Carnival was banned in rebel areas during the 40 years of Franco's dictatorship, but returned to its full riotous glory in 1980, along with the traditional ‘chirigotas’ – local groups performing satirical songs and sketches lampooning politicians and other prominent figures who compete to be the best of the year. The fiesta culminates next Sunday in a grand procession and in the ‘entierro del boquerón’ (the funeral of the anchovy, symbol of Málaga and the malagueños).
