The tomb of Bishop Teodomiro has been found and authenticated.

According to tradition, Bishop Teodomiro of Iria Flavia was the first person to 'certify' that the long lost tomb of the Apostle Saint James the Greater had been found. Or in other words, he can be credited with having started the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

In case you do not read Spanish, here are the main conclusions:

1. The bones belong to a male.
2. Carbon-14 dating indicates that he died after the age of 45.
3. Physical features suggest that he had a weak build and did not perform physical labor during his life, which is consistent with the figure of a bishop.
4. The dating of a rib suggests that he died around 820 AD, with a margin of error of up to 15 years (the tomb was discovered in 813 AD)
5. The carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms accumulated in the bones allow us to infer what this person ate and where their food came from. The results reveal that they had a very austere diet, almost monastic, but not as limited as that of the peasants of the time, which is consistent with a bishop who lived like a monk.
6. The isotopes indicate that he lived near Santiago, although his origin was further southwest, where Iria Flavia is located.
7. His tomb was found right under the nave of the Cathedral.
The above data allows us ''to say that it is Teodomiro with 98% probability'', according to Dr. Pérez-Ramallo.
