We may have packed away the decorations, taken down the lights, and Santa’s trip down the chimney a mere memory, but in Spain it’s the 6th January that concludes the festive period. Known as the Fiesta de los Reyes (3 kings festival), and held on the ‘twelfth day of Christmas’, it is borne from the celebration of baby Jesus by the 3 kings (or wise men) who travelling from the East, baring gifts. On the 5th January there are parades in each town and village, with effigies or figures of each king who handfuls of sweets over the crowds. Afterwards children go to bed early (like our Christmas Eve tradition), and leave shoes outside their bedroom to be filled with gifts and snacks for the camels. On the 6th, families get together to celebrate, share gifts and eat ‘la rosca de Reyes’ - a crown shaped cake often filled with marzipan - which has a bean inside, and whoever gets the slice with the bean, has to pay for the cake! Happy Reyes!

Spanish Christmas Traditions: El Caganer - the pooping man 😳
We've mentioned him previously, but who (and WHY?) is a bare-bottomed man having a 💩 next to baby Jesus in his crib as part of the Christmas nativity scene?! 'l Caganer ('The Pooper') is a traditional figure from Catalonia, and has featured in nativity scenes since the 18th Century. Dressed in peasant clothes and wearing a red 'barretina', he is a symbol of good luck and fertility for the coming year (possibly 'fertilising' the land for a good harvest.. or 'pooping' out all the bad 💩 of the last year to make way for the new one...no-one is really sure)! All we know is that if you spot a Caganer in a nativity scene then it's good luck, and you can keep the kids entertained for hours on a Caganer hunt, because why would they not find a bare butt anything but brilliant!

Spanish Traditions - Christmas Markets
Like most countries in Europe, Spain enjoy a good Christmas Market. But which ones are the best to go to? Here's our top 3...
The Largest- Plaza Mayor, Madrid: Simply the biggest Christmas market in Spain, located in the city’s Plaza Mayor. The square turns into a winder wonderland of 104 wooden huts, selling sweet treats, handmade toys and nativity ornaments.
The Oldest - Fira de Santa Llúcia, Barcelona: Established in 1786, Spain’s oldest Christmas market can be found in the square overlooked by Barcelona cathedral. Dedicated to nativity figurines, crafts and artisans, one of the many traditions you can find (and particularly popular with kids) is the 'Caganer'. These nativity characters show a bare bottomed man having a 💩! (More on this peculiar tradition another day!)
The Traditional: Feria del Belén, Sevilla: This unique market is made up of stalls dedicated only to selling figurines, animals and buildings to add to your Belén or Nativity scene. The meticulous detail in these items is a wonder to behold in itself.

El Belén
We are all familiar with the nativity scene often found at churches during Christmas and played out by school children in one form or another (our daughter was once a cowgirl/Dolly Parton in her nativity 🤣). But in Spain it is very traditional for homes to have highly detailed and extensive scenes, going beyond the typical crib scene and extending to whole village creations and biblical landscapes. You’ll find entire Christmas markets dedicated to the sale of just nativity figurines and decorations. Many towns will also feature their own Belén, often with live animals in the Plaza Major. In Catalonia, it is good luck if you spot the ‘Caganer’….a little pooping man… a tradition we’ll cover soon 😳

Spanish Christmas Tradition - 'El Gordo' 💰
We all like to play games at Christmas, but the Spanish go big with almost everyone in Spain partaking in 'El Gordo', the worlds largest lottery! 💶 Known as 'the fat one' due to the size of the top prize, this lottery is unusual as it will have 1000s of winners sharing out a whopping €2.4bn! 💶

Many win the numerous smaller monetary prizes, but everyone hopes to win 'el gordo' - the top prize, which is around €4m! The results are drawn on the 22nd December, during a (long) televised event held at El Teatro Real de Madrid, and features children calling out, or even singing, the numbers. 2024 will be its 213th year, having started in 1812 to raise funds for Spanish troops fighting Napoleon's invasion.

If you take part this year....good luck!

As we head full speed towards the festive period, we thought we'd share some Spanish Christmas traditions with you over the next few weeks🎄.

Let's start with how the Spanish wish people 'Merry Christmas' in Spain. The festive season is called 'Navidad', so you will hear "Feliz Navidad" in most places. There are variations across Spain, however, so may hear "Bon Nadal" in Catalonia or even "Bo Nadal" in Galicia in the North of the Country.

Feliz Navidad to you all! 🎄🎁
