Thank you, Tenerife! Thank you, Canary Islands!
Dear fellow islanders and visitors,
In recent days we have faced an unprecedented catastrophe in Tenerife.
Our beloved island has been consumed by flames. An extremely valuable part of the Canary Island ecosystem and many people have been affected in one way or another by this devastating fire.
We have publicly thanked, and continue to express our gratitude, to the volunteers and paid personnel for their efforts to extinguish the fires and to evacuate those affected. Their dedication, bravery and fortitude in the face of these most difficult circumstances have been a great example and a source of inspiration to all.
Also constantly in our thoughts are those who have had to leave their homes, and who have suffered great material loss. To you we send all our best wishes, and wish you the strength to overcome this difficult situation.
For our part, we have been supporting the fire-fighting teams in different ways—for example, by making available to them our Aguamansa reservoir, with its capacity for over a million litres of water. We have also issued daily warnings to visitors who may have been planning to travel to the Teide National Park that the access routes are closed, in order to ensure their safety and to avoid unnecessary diversions that could hinder the hard-working teams in different areas of the island.
In addition, our social networks have been relaying the various official announcements with the aim of keeping the public informed of the progress of the wildfire.
Sadly, it will take years to restore our lost natural heritage to its former glory, but just as we have been able to bring the fire under control, so shall we rise to that challenge.
Now, more than ever, we must remain united in the face of adversity. Together, we will work to rebuild this island that we love so much. We will continue to do everything in our power to achieve the environmental and economic recovery of Tenerife. And to this end, we will resume our services with a total guarantee of safety, for both our staff and our visitors.
Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to the people of the Canary Islands who, once again, have demonstrated an extraordinary sense of public duty, co-operating with the authorities and showing solidarity with their fellow citizens.
We would like to send a message of hope to the people of the island. We are sure that, like the Phoenix, we will arise from the ashes, stronger than ever before.
