THE 10 MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWNS AND VILLAGES IN THE PROVINCE OF BADAJOZ
7/10
FERIA
The rise and fall of the narrow lanes guide the visitor through Feria, where you can see monuments such as the 16th-century castle—the main bastion and centre of operations of the Duke of Feria—the town hall, and the church of San Bartolomé. A little further away, on the Sierra del Molino, is the Casa del Monje dolmen, here you can view the surrounding area from the southern slope of the Sierra Vieja mountain. Originally, Celts, Romans and Arabs came here to settle, although it was not until the 15th century that it acquired its current name, after Gómez Suárez de Figueroa, master of the Order of Santiago. He acquired these lands under the title of Duke of Feria.

Las extensas llanuras y dehesas extremeñas de la provincia exhiben en estos lugares cercanos a la frontera lusa una rica cultura y bellos paisajes.

Our house is a sanctuary of peace and tranquility where you’ll find it impossible not to relax. Calle Castillo is the oldest street in the village, quiet, with hardly any traffic and situated immediately below the castle.

There are two sleeping areas. Each one having two rooms. The first room has a double bed and the other is a sitting room. In total, the house sleeps 4 people.

The rates are very reasonable with discounts for a single couple, a single person, and weekly rentals. Find out using the Messenger button above, by WhatsApp, telephone or by email at [email protected].

The house dates from the 15th century with traditional hardwood doors and windows, possessing either vaulted ceilings or roofs of pine logs and terracotta tiles. There’s a mix of old and new: antiques and fabrics from around the world combined with modern classics, and many books to take advantage of during your stay.

The colourful and creative Fiesta de la Santa Cruz reaches its culmination during the first week in May where you may find yourself rubbing shoulders with celebrities and dignitaries while mingling with television cameras.

The fiesta takes place from the 27th of April till the 4th of May. The most important dates are the 2nd and 3rd of May with the principle procession and many other cultural activities.

For such a small town Feria has its share of historical attractions; admittedly the 360-degree view from the castle's keep is hard to beat. If you miss the climb to the castle (don't forget you are more than half way from our house) you will miss an essential part of Feria.

High above the village, on a vertiginous escarpment, it was renovated many years ago: its marble windows restored and a museum recreating village life occupies its interior. The view from the keep is unbeatable!

Down in the village, the elegant town hall possesses half of the arcades of the Plaza de España (the other half facing them) offering a moment of relaxation in the shade; a place for a drink and tapas during midday or during the early hours.

Although the town is famous for its convivial bars open until the early hours, during the festivities the squares on either side of the imposing church offer a kaleidoscope of cultural attractions: from plays and flamenco to folk groups and vibrant processions during the frequent village festivities.

Ash Wednesday and Easter will be approaching fast ... but what's happening the weekend before Ash Wednesday?

Well, it's Carnival time in Spain and in most of Europe. It's commonly said that the Badajoz Carnival is one of the best in Spain, and what's more it's only thirty minutes from our house. Colourful, exuberant, gregarious and excessive, it's the perfect antidote to Ash Wednesday! ... and, if you don't feel like driving, the celebrations in Feria are not bad either.

If you're indifferent to dressing up in absurd costumes, you can always book a romantic weekend with us to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Book between the dates of Friday, February 11 and Monday, February 28 (mentioning Valentine's Day or Carnival) and you will get a 20% discount.

Festivities come thick and fast in Feria. Even if you've left your visit to chance there's likely to be fiesta playing itself out: if not in Feria then in one of the surrounding towns or villages.

That said, you won't want to miss Feria's two most important fiestas.

The colourful and creative Fiesta de la Santa Cruz reaches its culmination during the first week in May where you may find yourself rubbing shoulders with celebrities and dignitaries while mingling with television cameras.

Later in the year the Fiesta de San Bartolomé — the patron saint of Feria — bids farewell to the summer with an irrepressible week of cultural activities.

You'll enjoy our standard tariff (prices rise during these festivities) if you book well in advance. Contact us for more details.

Our house—steeped in history—is in the village of Feria, high-up in the foothills of the Sierra Morena, Extremadura, Spain.

But, what will you find in Feria?

It was declared a conjunto histórico artístico (a conservation zone) in 1970 and is known as 'El Faro de Extremadura' (The Lighthouse of Extremadura) with enviable views of the surrounding countryside.

The town was originally a military garrison for the Duke of Feria in the 15th century and as well as the exceptional castle and imposing parish church, many of the original houses remain; they are simple, robust and are charming examples of vernacular construction. Along the steep and picturesque streets, you’ll typically find stone ramps leading up to the front doors of the houses.

Feria is small, friendly and still part of the authentic Spain, which is getting harder and harder to find. If you’re lucky you’ll still see workers going to the fields on mules or donkeys.

In spring the fields around the village are filled with polychromatic wild flowers. Swathes of poppies cover the dehesa (the grazing land for Iberian pigs) like red carpets, a regal welcome laid out for flocks of birds returning from a winter in warmer climes.

Feria is still a rural community where grapes, olives, almonds, pigs and goats are the main crops and livestock. Here you can see our neighbour’s kids! … let us know when you book and we can get their cheese for you.
