The Feast of St. John begins after sunset tonight, June 23, St. John's Eve: the eve of the Christian holiday St. John's Day. It is the day on which the birth of John the Baptist is commemorated. The prophet who announced the coming of a messiah in the person of Jesus, whom he would later baptize.

The 18th edition of the ‘Fuerteventura en Música’ (FEM) festival already has a date: the weekend of July 5-6, 2024, we will once again vibrate on La Co**ha beach in El Cotillo, where various foreign and local artists will meet.

About the festival:
Fuerteventura en Música has established itself as one of the most important festivals in the Canary Islands, thanks to its commitment to musical diversity and its incomparable location. La Co**ha beach, with its fine sand and crystal-clear waters, offers a perfect setting to enjoy live music.

For 2 days and two nights, attendees will be able to enjoy an eclectic mix of musical styles, including fusion, mestizaje, reggae, rock, folk and electronic music. The lineup, which will be revealed soon, promises to bring together top-level national and international artists.

Tindaya Mountain
“big mountain”
in Guanches Language!

The Montaña de Tindaya is a mountain on Fuerteventura, the second biggest island of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic 100km of the coast of Africa. It was considered a sacred place by the pre-colonial (Guanches & Majoreros) local population, and is also known as the Holy/magic Mountain.

The Cultural heritage is very interesting to me.
It has a special historical and archaeological interest due to the number of rock carvings it contains. Tindaya was a sacred place for the aboriginal population of Fuerteventura, the Majoreros, who carved more than 300 engravings in the form of feet or podomorphs on it.

Podomorphic engravings have traditionally been considered to be present in the Canary Islands only on the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, although they have now also been found on the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and El Hierro. They are also found in areas of Berber cultural influence in North Africa.
Their exact meaning is not known, although it has been discovered that the podomorphs of Tindaya are oriented towards Teide in Tenerife and towards the island of Gran Canaria.

Precisely, from the top of Tindaya you can easily see the silhouette of Teide on clear days, located in a southwesterly direction. In turn, podomorphic engravings have also been found in Lanzarote that are oriented towards the Tindaya Mountain.
This last piece of information shows that the religious-cultural importance of Tindaya in the aboriginal period exceeded the limits of the island of Fuerteventura.
Tindaya has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

In addition to its historical value, the mountain has been recognised as a Natural Monument and a Point of Geological Interest by the Canary Islands Administration.

Despite everything, the high ornamental value of its trachyte has meant that the Tindaya stone has only been exploited recently.

The story of…

ERMITA DE NUESTRA DEL BUEN VIAJE in El Cotillo…

The Cotillo hermitage was founded by Sergeant Major Sebastián Trujillo Ruiz at the end of the 17th century. Exactly on June 7, 1680, (344 years ago) the hermitage was built on a farm owned by Sebastián. The land where the hermitage stands was previously purchased from Bartolomé González Calero.

The first chaplain of the temple was Sebastián Trujillo's nephew. One way to ensure that masses and festivals were held annually was a life annuity left by Sebastián for such actions, adding to the profits generated by the farm, the house, the cistern and the bakery.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE HERMITAGE

The door framed in black stone is located on the main façade, which is topped by a semicircular arch. The bell gable is found on the upper right side of the building, and is made up of a single bell hole. In front of the main door there is a calvary with a wooden cross.

THE SEAMAN VIRGIN OF THE GOOD VOYAGE

The virgin is related to the protection of the sailors of the area, whose marine life always endangered their physical integrity. For this reason, the virgin was prayed to or invoked to protect the long sea voyages.

The Virgin participates in the processions of the El Cotillo festivities. One is a maritime-terrestrial procession in which the boats are decorated and it also serves to remember all those people who died during their life at sea.

The next procession is nocturnal and takes place every two years. In this procession the Virgin is carried on shoulders, making a journey that goes from the Ermita del Cotillo to the town of Roque while the entire path is lit with torches.

We been visiting the little church in El Cotillo the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje.

Hermitage of Our Lady of the Good Voyage in the fishing village of El Cotillo. Hermitage built at the end of the 17th century. Due to its proximity to the sea, the hermitage served as a physical reference point for fishermen and boats.
