alley to the Mediterranean and North Africa beyond. Djebel Musa is a romantic, colourful, beautifully maintained architect-designed Spanish-style villa. The garden is a mixture of mature palms amongst rocks and shrubs as well as wild olives and carobs filled with song birds on a hillside at the very edge of the pretty 'white village' of Gaucin. It is maintained and equipped to a high standard. The double-height open-plan living room with minstrels' gallery leads to a large covered veranda. There is an archway through to the large dining room which leads to its own covered dining terrace.

4 of the bedrooms and the main living rooms have French windows onto their own terrace or balcony. The 4th and 5th bedrooms are set up as a studio apartment that can be let separately outside the summer season. There are other terraces around the garden. The summer months are when the bigger and most spectacular butterflies are seen in the garden. Two different species of Swallowtail, the Monarch and Charaxes (two-tailed Pasha). All photos from the garden.

Summer is already here.

Perfect temperatures (4C/9F cooler than the coast) of around 24-28C (75-82F). The pool is very pleasant with the heater we run from end April to October powered by solar panels (to offset heat loss at night).

The Booted Eagle pair are back for the summer. These were taken a week ago as they patrol the skies looking down at the ground in the farm below for things to eat!

Wild Peonies - one of the highlights of April is the walk up to the shoulder below Sierra El Hacho (25 minutes on a GR path from Gaucin's gasolinera - gas station/petrol station or the cafe, Venta La Serrania).
In an oak woodland, the peonies thrive in the damp soil at the foot of the north face of El Hacho. Best to visit mid week as it can attract enthusiastic groups at weekends.
Along the path, there are giant globe fennels, intense mauve vetches and wild sage.

This week in Gaucin... wildflowers are in full bloom. Taken from a large meadow below the village looking back. To get here walk down the Camino De Gibraltar from the village.
There is a red dot under Villa Djebel Musa and a green dot under its sister, Villa Estrella.

April, May and June are when Gaucin becomes a paradise for spring flowers and butterflies. All these pictures are either from in the garden or within a few hundred metres.

For spring visitors to Gaucin, the spectacle of the migration of birds from Africa to Europe is an almost daily occurence (depends on wind direction in the Straits of Gibraltar). It had been very wet for 3 days and on the Sunday morning there were showers and clouds but favourable weather for crossings. This 'column' had 50 to 100 Black Kites and a few Griffon Vultures which headed up the Genal River valley before the used the 'hill' of Gaucin with upcurrents to give them height to continue their journey. Several other 'columns' came through during the morning.
It had probably taken them an hour to fly up from Gibraltar and many of the birds were visibly wet - but Black Kites are robust and highly successful birds of prey. Despite their name, they are not very 'black' at all - but look like it when viewed from below. These pictures were taken from Villa Estrella, next door to Villa Djebel Musa last weekend but the views are the same.

Wet Spring morning in Gaucin. Inspiring views from the villa aided by being 600m/2000ft above sea level. Rain in March will bring wonderful wild flowers in April and May.

February and March are cooler months but sunny days bring the feeling of summer with flowers and butterflies.

Some evenings the whole sky is on fire. Being up at 2000ft/600m the views of the sky and landscape are breathtaking on evenings like this.
