The Fig Tree Penarth

The Fig Tree Penarth Secluded holiday villa in la Alpujarra, Granada
Set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains Airports are 60 minutes, Granada and 90 minutes to Malaga.

Opened in 2020 by Mike & Sandie, after 10 years running a popular restaurant in Penarth, south Wales, we fancied a change of lifestyle and moved to one of our favourite places, the Bohemian town or Orgiva. Orgiva is the capitol of las Alpujarras and Casa Amarilla is in the ideal location, 1.5 km from Orgiva town, which has shops, supermarkets, tabernas and restaurants... Casa Amarilla is surroun

ded by olive and citrus and almond trees. We are 50 mins from Granada, home of Flamenco and the Alhambra, 25 mins from the beaches of Salobreña and the Costa Tropical, 1 hour from the ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada. A car is recommended if you plan on visiting the many picturesque mountain villages and the beaches. Andalusia is a beautiful place with a huge variety of things to see and do. Whether it is walking, hiking, cycling or horse riding, bird and wildlife watching, visiting historic sites, museums or galleries. Lying by the pool or on a quiet beach, everything is easy. We live close by with our 4 friendly cats who roam around the gardens of both properties. Casa Amarilla is private villa in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The Casa Sleeps 6, 1 double and two twin rooms, cot also available, Amazing location and views. Perfect for walking amongst the olives, almond and orange trees, great for nature lovers with Ibex and Civets, Wild boar and wealth of birds. Perfectly situated for visiting the picturesque mountain villages of Pampaneira Capileira and Bubion, Granada and the Alhambra as well as the beaches of Salobreña and the Costa Tropical. Bike hire available in town, as is horse riding or just relax in the private gardens, terraces or by the pool and read a book.

A bill to ban the live export of animals by sea has passed its final hurdle in Aotearoa – the horrific trade will cease as of April next year 🙌

Recognising that extended time at sea heightens animals’ risk of heat stress and other issues, Minister for Agriculture, Damien O’Connor stated that the ban “reinforces and builds on New Zealand's reputation".

We’d like to congratulate decision-makers, and of course the dedicated people who continued to speak up, on this historic step towards a world that is kinder to all animals.

While caring people in Australia eagerly await an announcement from the government about when a phase out of the brutal live sheep trade will be in place, our neighbours have already taken action to stop animals suffering at sea.

Thank you to all who continue to urge our government to take action. Our work alongside you will continue until this becomes reality in Australia, as well 💪

Gilbert Viader, my friend and wine merchant is also now also a Vineyardist and wine maker. His 1st wine is now available for you to buy and try, in that order 😆
I helped out at the vineyard a couple of times and I can assure you, no one would believe the amount of work that goes in to making a bottle of wine in Wales.
I haven't tried it but let me know how it is 🍾

Hello, If you like quality wines or know someone who does and would like a collection, I am reluctantly selling mine. It is all stored with a vintner in Cardiff and I can arrange delivery. If you are interested please message me and I will send you a list of what I have. Some are ready for drinking now, some will benefit from further collating, from 2-30 years + :-)
It is sad to sell them but I no longer have the facilities to store them.
Thanks
Mike

Hola, We are in lock down here and have been since 14th March. Although no confirmed cases in Orgiva, everyone is taking the threat very seriously.
It is amazing to see nature waking up here, the almonds flowered in February and now have fruits on them, the avocados and oranges are flowering and small amazing, and they still have so many of last year's fruit still on them. Nature is continuing no matter what us humans are doing
We hope this isolation will be over soon and we can again open for visitors and holiday makers, and share our beautiful casa, gardens and amazing countryside.
In the mean time, stay safe and stay sensible.

Two of our chefs from the Fig Tree, Nathan and Jamie are running the kitchen, and I think a lot of the menu will be similar to the Fig Tree.
If you miss the Fig Tree Restaurant, then this could be a great alternative.
When you visit, say hello to the chefs and tell them where you heard about it.
Missing you all, hope to see you in sunny Spain.

Sandie and I would like to thank you for you support over the 10 years we ran the Fig Tree.  We couldn't have done it without you. Hello, we have two positions available in our kitchen. Both are for Chef de Parties, aka CDP's
Jo is leaving us and Callum, our junior, left last month.
Padrig Jones (formally of "Le Gallois") is helping us out prior him moving to Aberystwyth where he opens a new restaurant at the end of July.

We are happy to employ one Commis chef who is keen to gain more experience and take a step up, But we also need one with experience cooking food from scratch.

Please message me via Facebook or give me a call.at the restaurant.

Please share this as wide as possible as it is not easy finding the right people to maintain our consistent standards.

Thanks,

Mike

Our story

Having run our restaurant in Penarth since 2009, we needed a change, we needed to get our lives back.

Having visited Las Alpujarras, many times over the years we couldn’t think of a better place to live. With flights from most UK airports to Malaga and from a few to Granada, it is the perfect location to fly back to the UK to visit friends and family, yet a world away from the hustle and bustle of Britain.

We moved here in November 2019 and wish we had done it years ago. The perfect base to explore the Sierra Nevada and the Costa Tropical. The Pueblos Blancos of the Alpujarras. Every day is a new delight. We hope that you will visit and discover it for yourself.

Mike and Sandie
