The house is over 100 years old. It maintains much of its rustic charm combined with the conveni

ence of a modern bathroom and kitchen, spacious, well appointed bedrooms and central location in Hinojares. Since we came in 2009, the 1st time together, many changes have taken place. Thankfully M can do all the work himself, so this house is really a reflection of us. My vision, but his skills. Hinojares
Dating back to Roman times, Traxium as it was known, is in a valley, surrounded by mountains, with a mixture of cave, old & new houses. There are a number of spring fed, potable, fountains. The main one being in the main square, just outside Casa en la Plaza. Municipal Swimming Pool a short walk from us. Opened in 2021, this is a great new facility and only a couple of euros to use. (June > September)

There are 2 bars a few metres away
* Bar Social (Terrace Bar), serving drinks, tapas (free) and food. Closed on Mondays.
* Kiosk, serving drinks & tapas (free). Closed on Wednesdays. The Area
There is a variety of things to do from horse riding (Hinojares); kayaking in either of our 2 local embalses (Bolera or Negratín); walking one of the many routes in the area - easy gorge walk along the river in Castril to more challenging walks - just ask and we can let you know some of the routes our past guests have taken. Sightseeing opportunities galore, from Guadix with its cathedral and Roman Theatre Ruins; Baeza & Úbeda, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites; Cazorla; Baza; even Granada or Jaén make a good day trip. I am easily contacted should you like some recommendations on what to do or see. Martin & I, having moved to Spain �, want to share this beautiful part of the country with travellers from all over the world �. We are lucky to have welcomed folk from Spain �, UK �, Germany �, France�, Belgium �, USA �, Mexico � & the Netherlands �. What do we like doing in our Down Time? We both � travelling �� & good food � need to do more of the former & maybe a little less of the latter. But life is here to be enjoyed and this is even more a priority now as we realise how lucky we are. Liz �

Wednesday 21st August Fiesta de Hinojares - day 4 Everyone ♥️s a band 🎺🥁🎷 This afternoon there's a concert in the Plaza de la Constitución, tonight there's live music which starts around 11pm and goes on till the early hours If you want to immerse yourself in our Fiesta, Casa en la Plaza is the place to do it - view the goings on from the small 1st floor balcony or just pop into the square Before the concert, there's a great parade around the streets of Hinojares - always very colourful as participants are encouraged to wear their flamenco dresses etc 💃🏻🪭💃🏻 The fiesta goes on till Saturday, and, as much as we really like being in such a traditional little town, we are pleased to be a few minutes walk away from all the action - we can dip in and out to what we want 😌🥳😌 #fiestadehinojares #hinojares #fiestasdeespana #spainlovesaparty #hinojaresfiesta #traditionalspain #inlandspain

We can accommodate up to 6 people any one time:

single traveller (double bed)

2 couples in two rooms (2 x double beds)

family (2 adults) and up to 2 children in one room (1 x double bed + 1 x sofa bed)

3 adults in one room/two rooms ( 1 x double bed + 1 x sofa bed in 1 room) or (2 x double beds in 2 rooms)

Hi, we are Liz and Martin Rooker.

Martin & I are a mature, but active couple who, in 2008, met online, yes it does sometimes work. We eventually ‘tied the knot’ in July 2015; a totally joyous occasion held at my church, but extremely casual and great fun – the invite actually said “No suits allowed” – BBQ & party afterwards – it couldn’t have been a better day. I arrived and we left the church on an unusual form of transport! Feel free to ask when you come.

I, Liz, grew up in the hospitality business; my parents were publicans and I spent my life from the age of 2 or 3 till leaving home at 18½ living in pubs. Feeding & looking after people, I think, is in my DNA. My dad had been a chef years ago, in the army & my mum was a very good cook and meticulous when it came to cleaning. In my working life, I spent 12 years in the armed forces, taught in colleges and university, worked for local government and a couple of charities. There were other jobs in between, the usual waitress, bar staff, shop type of thing that you do when starting out or bringing up a family. One other thing that I did in UK was host French and Dutch students. I was doing this before I met Martin, so he had to fit in with me, my son and our ‘little guests, sometimes up to 4 of them at a time. His role was usually just picking them up in the evening and dropping them off in the morning, but getting used to having folk around was quite hard for him, but he was great. This is where he had a crash course in hospitality.

Martin has also had a varied work life, from boat building to dodging bombs! He bought this house in 2003 with a view to staying here with wife & 2 kids, however it didn’t work out and he went back to blighty. Before we left UK, he was a welder/fabricator, something, he continues to do here. As well as doing all the electrics, plumbing, plastering etc on another house we bought last year, he works for local folk on whatever they need doing.

The Property

We have to go back, before we can go forward - the house was bought in 2003, it was totally inhabitable. But he moved his family here, rented locally, and worked hard to get it in a suitable condition to live in. Unfortunately, they didn’t stay here long and the house was once again left empty.

Since we came in 2009, for the 1st time together, many changes have taken place. Thankfully Martin can do all the work himself, so this house is really a reflection of us. My vision, but his skills.

Our Values

We are both conscientious, apply high standards to our work and try to be honest and open with those we meet. Now, having moved to Spain, want to share this beautiful part of the country with travellers from all over the world. We are lucky to have welcomed folk from Spain, UK, Germany, France, Belgium, USA & the Netherlands.

What do we like doing in our Down Time? Well, we both travelling & good food, need to do more of the former & maybe a little less of the latter. But life is here to be enjoyed and this is even more a priority now as we realise how lucky we are.

Our Unexpected Family Member

Oh, I suppose I’d better mention our feline foster 😺 cat, Maisie. She was dropped off by her feral mother when she was only 3 weeks old, the only 1 of 3 kittens that survived. We never wanted animals as we wanted the freedom to travel whenever we wanted, however, fate had other ideas. We love her to bits, especially when she curls up with one of us in the morning – yes, she is in the bedroom, often on the bed, but that’s better than it was, ‘cos she was often in the bed when she was a little younger. She doesn’t do that very often now. I know it’s naughty, but well, we love her
