Casa en la Plaza, Hinojares

Casa en la Plaza, Hinojares Ideal location for exploring this unique part of Spain. Nature? History? We have it all 🙋 The Property
The house is over 100 years old. My vision, but his skills.
(11)

Hola, Liz here
I, and my husband Martin can now offer you a Great Value, Self Catering holiday rental with up to 3 bedrooms - 2 x doubles & 1 x single, as we have moved into another property just down the road. It maintains much of its rustic charm combined with the convenience of a modern bathroom and kitchen, spacious, well appointed bedrooms and central location in Hinojares. Since we came in

2009, the 1st time together, many changes have taken place. Thankfully M can do all the work himself, so this house is really a reflection of us. Hinojares
Dating back to Roman times, Traxium as it was known, is in a valley, surrounded by mountains, with a mixture of cave, old & new houses. There are a number of spring fed, potable, fountains. The main one being in the main square, just outside Casa en la Plaza. Municipal Swimming Pool a short walk from us. Opened in 2021, this is a great new facility and only a couple of euros to use. (June > September)

There are 2 bars a few metres away
* Bar Social (Terrace Bar), serving drinks, tapas (free) and food. Closed on Mondays.
* Kiosk, serving drinks & tapas (free). Closed on Wednesdays. The Area
There is a variety of things to do from horse riding (Hinojares); kayaking in either of our 2 local embalses (Bolera or Negratín); walking one of the many routes in the area - easy gorge walk along the river in Castril to more challenging walks - just ask and we can let you know some of the routes our past guests have taken. Sightseeing opportunities galore, from Guadix with its cathedral and Roman Theatre Ruins; Baeza & Úbeda, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites; Cazorla; Baza; even Granada or Jaén make a good day trip. I am easily contacted should you like some recommendations on what to do or see. Martin & I, having moved to Spain , want to share this beautiful part of the country with travellers from all over the world . We are lucky to have welcomed folk from Spain , UK , Germany , France, Belgium , USA , Mexico & the Netherlands . What do we like doing in our Down Time? We both travelling & good food need to do more of the former & maybe a little less of the latter. But life is here to be enjoyed and this is even more a priority now as we realise how lucky we are. Liz

Great little video showcasing Castril

Castril is only 35/40 minutes away and another popular place to visit for our guests

To get there you go through Pozo Alcón, alongside the Embalse de la Bolera, up over the mountain, looking down on the Embalse de Portillo, before heading into Castril

Market day is on a Friday, so parking can be a little harder then, but otherwise, fairly easy to find.

Carry on down the hill to a large parking area and the start of the Gorge Walk.
This is an easy walk with a great 'wobbly' bridge just before you get to the tunnel
Don't worry, just as soon as you think you can't see, light appears at the end 😅

There is a way to get up to the village, but it's a bit of a challenge for the likes ofe, so I've only walked to the end, then back again ☺️

In the summer, take your swimming kit, because by the parking area is Castril's beautiful town pool with a bar attached

The thermal spring in Zújar

Yet another Free place to visit

There's plenty of parking and a great bar/restaurant by the parking area which, also has a pool that can be used for a couple of €s

At the moment, the reservoir, Embalse de Negratín, is very low so much of the lake has been reclaimed by nature

The road, after you have driven through Zújar, follows alongside the lake and is a bit bumpy in places, so going fast isn't really an option, enjoy the journey and take in the views

Great video showing the Cuevas del Agua
It's a short drive from us at Casa en la Plaza, Hinojares
It's a wibbly wobbly route through the mountains but the views are spectacular

As it's free to visit you can go at anytime
Many of our guests go there before visiting Quesada or Cazorla

Don't worry, there's a less wibbly way back from Quesada 😂

There's a great bar/restaurant a few metres up the road from the caves at Tíscar. (Open lunchtimes)
Loads of parking and a pretty little chapel to visit too. Even if the doors aren't open, you can see into the chapel through the metal gates (rejas)

SPANISH MOTORWAYS

N332 & CAR REGISTRATIONS SPAIN 🇪🇸 🇪🇺

Travelling on the motorways (autopistas) in Spain is an experience that showcases the country’s modern infrastructure. Here we look at the difference between Autopistas & Autovias and how they have evolved.

🛣️ AUTOPISTAS vs. AUTOVIAS - What's the Difference?

The distinction between 'A' and 'AP' roads is a significant one and is crucial for drivers to understand, especially when considering costs and the nature of the journey.

🟦 A Roads (Autovías):

These are dual carriageway roads, often designed for high-speed travel but may have intersections, roundabouts, and access points. They might have evolved from older roads and were upgraded to handle increased traffic.

A Roads are generally toll-free meaning that travellers can use them without incurring direct costs, though, like all infrastructure, they are funded indirectly through taxation.

While they can be found throughout Spain, A Roads are prevalent in regions where the construction of high-speed toll roads may not be economically viable.

💳 AP Roads (Autopistas de Peaje):

AP Roads are also dual carriageways designed for high-speed travel but are of a higher standard compared to A Roads. They typically have controlled access points, with grade-separated junctions and fewer direct entries/exits.

As the 'Peaje' indicates, these are toll roads. Users are required to pay based on the distance travelled. Toll booths are strategically located at entry and exit points.

AP Roads often connect major cities, ports, and tourist areas and are intended to provide a faster, more direct route for long-distance travellers. The tolls collected are used to maintain and upgrade the infrastructure.

🔢 Junction Numbering

Historically, most Spanish motorways employed a sequential numbering system, whereby junctions were numbered consecutively, starting from the beginning of the motorway. For instance, the first junction would be "Salida 1" (Exit 1), the second "Salida 2," and so on.

However, in more recent times, there's been a shift towards a kilometric system of numbering. Under this system, the junction number corresponds to the distance in kilometres from the motorway's starting point. So, a junction located 15 kilometres from the beginning of the motorway would be labelled "Salida 15." This method offers the advantage of immediately understanding how far along the motorway you are based on the junction number, and also allows for new junctions to be added without renumbering the entire motorway.

🪧 Marker Boards

In addition to junction numbers, you'll likely notice a series of small, rectangular marker boards placed at regular intervals alongside the road. Here's what they denote:

📏 Distance Markers - These are the most common type of marker boards. Placed every kilometre, they display the motorway’s code (e.g., A-7 or AP-68), followed by the distance in kilometres from the start of the motorway. The number increases / decreases as you travel further along the motorway. It's a great tool for drivers to gauge their location, especially if they're awaiting a specific exit.

🦺 Emergency Markers - Another type of marker board you might encounter is the emergency board. These have an added SOS sign and provide crucial information to emergency services. In case of an accident or breakdown, by quoting the nearest marker board's details, drivers can ensure a quicker response as the services can pinpoint their exact location.

⚠️ Additional Information - Some marker boards might also display additional symbols or codes that denote features like tunnels, bridges, or other significant infrastructure points.

🛣️ Using Spanish Motorways

Navigating Spanish motorways is straightforward once you grasp the system of junction numbering and the purpose of marker boards. The kilometric system, in particular, is intuitive and practical, allowing drivers to ascertain their progress and proximity to desired exits. Meanwhile, the marker boards, especially the emergency ones, prioritise safety and efficiency. So, the next time you find yourself on a Spanish autopista, you'll be well-equipped to understand the nuances of the road. Safe travels!

🌟 Remembering a Remarkable Life 🌟

Today, we celebrate what would have been my Dad's 110th birthday.
Born in 1913 in the picturesque town of Ammanford, South Wales, his journey through life was nothing short of extraordinary.
Throughout his life, he witnessed the world change in profound ways.

His parents operated a bakery in Ammanford, where the aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air.
Little did he know that his learnt culinary skills would later lead him to the Army Catering Corps and later as a chef, working on the South Coast of England, where he met my mum.

Before all this, his path took him to Ireland, where he embarked on a unique adventure – breeding beautiful Samoyed dogs with his 1st wife. It's a chapter of his life shrouded in mystery, one I wish I knew more about.

What I do know is that he was a man who believed in love, commitment, and second chances. He was married for over two decades before his path led him to my mum, one that ultimately brought me, and my brother, into this world.

The photograph shared here holds a special place in my heart. It captures a moment of pure joy and love – my Dad, holding my son Ben, who is now 32 years old. It's a testament to the timeless bonds that connect generations.
He would have loved and been so proud of the young man Ben has become and I hope, proud of me and the new life Marty & I have forged, here in Spain.
Unfortunately, he never met Marty, but I'm sure he would have approved of him and given us his blessing

Today, we honour his memory and the rich tapestry of experiences that made him who he was.
Happy Birthday, Dad.

You may be gone, but you're forever in my heart and I miss you. 💕🎂

Please share your special memory of YOUR DAD
Maybe even add a picture, if you have one

Last October I organised an Artisans Market, here in Hinojares.
It was a great day with 20 stalls, Free Horse Riding, Bouncy Castle & Story Telling for the Children. Rob entertained everybody with his stilt walking & juggling
Not forgetting both our bars were open and Francis came along with his Churros van.
I also did over 40 Ploughmans Lunches from our home, just down the road from Casa en la Plaza, Hinojares
A great turn out for, what was, my first try at organising something like this.

Well, guess what??? I'm doing it again 🤣🤣🤣
Saturday 7th October, 10am - 2pm
Already over 20 stalls have confirmed, the horse riding and bouncy castle will be back and we have face painting as an added activity.

I will be doing Ploughmans Lunches again 🥖🧀🍏

Why am I posting all of this?
Well, if you live near here, we do hope you will come along and maybe get some Christmas Shopping done. It's a great opportunity to support local crafts folk and businesses

We do still have availability for that weekend, so why not take the opportunity to visit the area, visit our Artisans Market and enjoy all that Hinojares has to offer
