Cook Drink Eat Spain is a week-long, culinary vacation that focuses on the culture and cuisine of the Spanish Basque Country.
Because of our love of Spanish food and culture, my husband and I wanted to find a way to share it with others. So, for two months a year (in late spring and in fall), we curate and host week-long, food-focused tours that include accommodations, cooking classes taught by local residents, sightseeing, winery visits and of course, lots of eating. Everything on the tour has been carefully selected and personally vetted by us. Our relationships with many residents, restaurants and businesses allow our guests to experience and appreciate Spain from the inside, through the eyes of a local, not a tourist.
Our tour is based in Hondarribia, a charming fishing village on the northern coast of Spain. I first visited this village in 1987 and it has retained its charm while becoming famous as one of the best places to experience the region’s cuisine. The area is known for the abundant seafood that is sourced daily from the Cantabrian Sea. Fresh anchovies, cod, hake, squid, and shellfish, often come straight off the fishing boats in our port and into the nearby kitchens. As a result, restaurants and our cooking classes focus on fresh, local food, in season.
Note: I attended the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and am fluent in Spanish. Attending university in another country was life-changing. I met fascinating people from all over the world and experienced many new things. It made me realize that our world is small and we can bridge cultural gaps and build compassion by turning people on to things they’ve never experienced before. I believe that even small things, like learning the stories behind a dish and how to prepare it, can help us see that different cultures, and thus all of us, are more similar than we think.
