Cumbre Vieja, La Palma, Canary Island
Volcano erupts in the Spanish Canary Islands, forcing evacuation of thousands. For the first time in half a century, a volcano on the Spanish Canary Islands has erupted in dramatic style. A mass evacuation effort is underway on La Palma, but no injuries have been reported.
The eruption on La Palma in the Canary Islands, sending fountains of lava and a plume of smoke and ash into the air from the Cumbre Vieja national park in the south of the island.
