Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (short form: Las Palmas) is a city and municipality in Gran Canaria in the autonomous community of Canary Islands, Spain. The city is the capital of the province of Las Palmas and, together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the shared capital of the Canary Islands. The municipality has 378,027 inhabitants (2023), on an area of 103.32 km². Its population makes Las Palmas the largest city in Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands.
Las Palmas was one of the first charter destinations for Swedes and the first charter plane to land at Las Palmas airport was Swedish.
History of the city
Las Palmas was founded on 24 June 1478 by Juan Rejón and the Castilian troops after they had defeated the local Guanches (indigenous people), starting with the conquest of Guiniguada, located in the Vegueta area of the city.
The cruel battle lasted five years and cost many lives among the city's inhabitants, who were unable to defend themselves with the inferior weapons available to the Reyes Católicos. The conquest was completed in 1483 when the island was incorporated into the Crown of Castile by Don Pedro de Vera and the inhabitants of the north-west island also submitted to him.
Las Palmas gradually grew in importance, becoming the administrative and political centre of the archipelago, and the city was named, among other things, Episcopal Diocese of the Canary Islands (which it is today for the province of Las Palmas) and Court of Inquiry.
In October 1595, Las Palmas managed to defend itself against an attack by the English Francis Drake and John Hawkins, but four years later the Dutchman Van der Does set fire to the city.
In the early centuries, Las Palmas became economically very successful, mainly due to the production of sugar cane in the 17th century, which was exported to America and Europe. Due to the economic boom, the city was subject to several pirate attacks until the 18th century.
In the 19th century, the city carried out important economic measures with the restoration of the open harbours, a measure that allowed large ships to dock in the city and was important for commercial relations throughout the archipelago. This was the first action that led to tourism becoming the main source of income. The first hotel, Hotel Santa Catalina, was built in 1890.
After the Spanish Civil War and World War II, tourism slowly increased. In Christmas 1957, tourism really took off when a plane from the Swedish airline Transair AB landed at Gando airport with 54 passengers on board. The era of charter holidays began and became the main source of income, not only in Gran Canaria but throughout the Canary Islands.
Las Palmas has nearby beaches (Las Canteras and Las Alcaravaneras) and the port of Puerto de la Luz, which was one of the busiest ports from the 1970s to the early 1990s. As a result, people from all over the world live and work in Las Palmas. Korean and Indian neighbourhoods are the largest, although most of the inhabitants have acquired Spanish citizenship.
The city
The municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has 378,027 inhabitants (2023),[2] making it the largest in the Canary Islands. The number of inhabitants in the municipality is increasing due to the migration of people from neighbouring municipalities.
Las Palmas Airport
Las Palmas airport is located on the eastern side of Gran Canaria, 22 kilometres south-southeast of the city centre. Bus services connect the airport with Las Palmas to hubs in the centre of San Telmo as well as to Santa Catalina in the north of the city.
Vegueta
Vegueta is the historic centre of Las Palmas. Las Palmas Airport is located in the centre of the city, where you can find the Consistory Buildings, the Episcopal Palace, the Regent's House la Casa Regental, Christopher Columbus' home and museum, and the Santa Ana Cathedral. The cathedral began construction in 1497 and was opened in 1570. Many architects were involved in the project, giving the building a variety of architectural styles. It has a neoclassical façade and Baroque altarpieces, among other features. The cathedral has 13 chapels.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus stopped in the city on his first voyage to America. He also stopped in Las Palmas on his way back. Today, there is a museum built in his honour, the Casa de Colón, located in Vegueta.
San Telmo
The district of San Telmo is located a few kilometres north of Vegueta and is a hub for bus services around the island. The bus station is also a centre for the municipal bus company Guaguas, which connects parts of the city of Las Palmas.
Alcaravaneras
Further north along the eastern side of Las Palmas is the Alcaravaneras neighbourhood, which has a marina for visitors and residents and a sheltered sandy beach for volleyball and other beach activities.
Santa Catalina
The Santa Catalina bus station, the nearby Parque de Santa Catalina and the short distance west to Playa de Las Canteras represent the centre of tourism and entertainment in Las Palmas. The area contains a mix of shops and urbanisation with an increasing concentration of hotels and restaurants closer to Playa de Las Canteras.
Playa de Las Canteras
Playa de las Canteras is 4 kilometres long. It starts at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, named in honour of the tenor Alfredo Kraus, and extends in an arc to the north. The beach has a natural reef part way out to sea, which protects part of the beach from rough seas and is a valuable part of the beach ecosystem. The southern end of the beach towards Auditorio Alfredo Kraus is unprotected, offers good surfing and is home to surf schools and beginner surfers. The central part of the beach north of the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus is protected by the reef that reaches above the water. This long stretch of beach is often filled with sun umbrellas, deck chairs and bathers. An opening in the protective reef at the northern end of the beach serves as an entrance and exit for a small group of small fishing boats anchored on the shore.
Playa del Confital
North of Las Palmas along the western shore is the natural area of El Confital with a hard, volcanic beach that is home to experienced surfers and bodyboarders. El Confital with Playa del Confital are also popular destinations for hiking.
El Puerto
El Puerto is the area surrounding Puerto de la Luz in northern Las Palmas. This area is home to the commercial harbour of Las Palmas, which is also home to the Fred Olsen ferry company, which operates from here to the Canary Islands east of Gran Canaria. The ferry company also runs its own buses to Puerto de las Nieves on the eastern side of Gran Canaria for ferry connections to the other Canary Islands.
Ciudad Jardín
Ciudad Jardín ('Garden City') is the quietest area of Las Palmas. Within the area there are several parks, such as the Doramas Park, which has recently been renovated and is home to hundreds of different plant species. The park is located between the old Doramas Park and Romano Park and connects Ciudad Jardín with the harbour street and the marina.
Transport
The municipal transport company Guaguas Municipales has 40 lines serving all areas of Las Palmas, both in the city centre and in the higher areas. Currently, line 12 (which runs through the entire lower part of the city) is being built as a "BRT-like" urban bus line, which will consist of the same type of gas-electric hybrid double-decker buses that are used in Malmö and elsewhere. The project was named "MetroGuagua" and is scheduled to open in 2024.
Previously there were two bus companies offering transport to other parts of the island, the Salcai company offered transport in the south of the island while the Utinsa company offered transport in the north of the island. Nowadays, both companies have merged and become one under the name Global.
Since 2011, there is also a company in the capital that makes it possible to rent bicycles.
At present there are no trains in Gran Canaria but there is a project for a possible train that will run from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Maspalomas. The train model envisaged was a hybrid between commuter and high-speed trains. More recently, plans were made to extend the train to Gáldar. This project is currently on hold due to underfunding and it is not known if it will ever materialise.
Nightlife
Las Palmas is a large city with a lively tourist scene and an economy largely financed by tourism. The historic neighbourhoods also have shops, bars and hotels. However, the largest number of hotels, restaurants and entertainment facilities are centred around Playa de Las Canteras and its promenade with periodic carnivals and family entertainment around Santa Catalina Park.
The big city festival, Fiestas de San Juan, celebrating the founding of the city, takes place in June each year. The Las Palmas Carnival is one of the most famous events in the city, with a Christmas and New Year inspired festival and carnival held around Santa Catalina Park in late January and early February. Las Palmas also hosts an annual film festival. The city's football team is called UD Las Palmas.
