There’s always something interesting happening here and lessons to learn from life….
I’m thinking of starting a blog. Here is my first day draft…

Blog: A Fruitful Life / Fruitful Living

Last week we had some unusual guests…perhaps unusual is the wrong word but I was certainly happy to see them safely on their way at the end of their stay.

Their stay was, let’s say, an interesting sequence of challenging events.

On the day of their planned arrival, I received a message. “Hi Andrew, Sadly we missed our flight today, but we will be arriving tomorrow evening around 8pm”
They later confessed that they simply hadn’t got up in time.
The airline was fortunately sympathetic and provided them with a flight the next day at a reasonable cost.

The next day I got a second message.
“Hi Andrew,
flight is delayed due to foggy conditions in the UK. We expect to arrive around 10pm. I hope this is okay”
Well that’s not their fault and at least they are communicating well, I thought.

When they eventually arrived by taxi late on Saturday night, they had enormous heavy suitcases which they wheeled, or more accurately dragged, across our gravel car park.

They had no idea that they had booked a self catering country apartment, not a hotel as they referred to us, and with shops 4kms away which were now closed and would remain closed all Sunday. I offered to put together a box of some essentials: milk, eggs, bread, fruit, cheese and the like, expecting that they might offer to contribute to the cost. The next day they messaged me,
“Hi Andrew,
Thank you so much for the food this morning, that was very generous of you”.

Normally we advise our guests to use the air conditioning unit for heating but unfortunately the week before the one in their room had broken down So I had put an electric radiator in the room for them to use instead. On Sunday morning they advised that the dishwasher cover door had come loose. As they had gone out, I asked their permission to enter the room to fix it. After fixing the door, I thought I’ll just check on the electric radiator. I noticed it had been tidily pushed out of the way…. and under the dressing table with the dials turned on and up. The dressing table was getting nice and hot…. but at least the fire risk had been adverted. I advised them accordingly.

Deciding they needed to hire a car, I gave them several local contacts to enquire with. In the meantime on the Monday morning they told me that they had decided to travel by bus to sightsee in Malaga old town and asked if I could give them a lift into town. I agreed and suggested that they might want to look around old Coin in the couple of hours before the bus came, as they hadn’t yet looked at the bus timetable to see that the bus didn’t come till 1pm. That evening I enquired how their day had gone. “We caught the bus” they said, “but two minutes later the car hirer phoned to say that the car was ready early. So we got straight off the bus again. Five minutes later the car hirer phoned again to say sorry the car wasn’t available until later in the day after all! So we spent the day in Coin until the car hire was ready.”

The next morning there was a knock on the door. “Do you know anything about cars?” they enquired. I said, “No, not really, but our Canadian guest Luis does, I’ll ask him. What’s the problem?” “It won’t start”, they replied. Very generously, Luis rose to the challenge and had a look. After turning the ignition, he reported, “It’s either the starter motor or it’s run out of fuel and the fuel gauge is reading in the red.” They called the car hirer out, who had a look and agreed with Luis’ diagnosis. So I lent the car hirer a fuel can and he went off to fill it up. Once fuel was added it started perfectly and the guests went off with a strong recommendation to fill the fuel tank before they did anything else.

By this time I was looking forward to their safe departure on the Friday. And Friday arrived without further mishaps (to my knowledge). When our housekeeper came to do the changeover, she found bright purple dye on the towels and pillowcases. I recounted the sequence of events. It’s always good to get it off your chest and have a listening ear! She responded pithily and very much to the point… “they are people who were brought up by parents who did everything for them.”

That’s a good lesson for me as a parent, I thought.
