We were really excited to see Madrid’s famous Retiro Park and Paseo del Prado added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List earlier this week. The two prestigious sites are always a must-see for any visitor to the Spanish capital with the 350-acre Retiro providing the ideal retreat to cool down in the summer heat and the 16th-century Paseo del Prado home to world-class museums, the iconic Plaza de Cibeles, and most recently the Mandarin Oriental Ritz. As Spain and Portugal get ready to welcome travelers – Spain confirmed just yesterday that full vaccinated tourists would be able to enter the country from 7 June (https://bit.ly/2Tb7MMS) – Madrid & Beyond director, Oscar has been out on the road in Portugal once again to meet partners and visit locations.

“This week, I visited two wonderful Relais & Châteaux hotels, the Yeatman Hotel in Porto and Quinta Nova - Douro Wines and Tourism in the Douro Valley. After so many months away, it felt great to be out and about and to find out, first-hand, what our partners have been doing over the last few months to welcome people back. I met up with some of our expert guides too. Bruno and Susana can’t wait to get back to doing what they do best – giving our travelers unforgettable, authentic experiences!”

Well, thank goodness 2020 is behind us! You can almost hear the sigh of relief as we embrace 2021.

While almost all of us still face major day-to-day worries, inconveniences and restrictions, at least we can see light at the end of the tunnel. As various vaccines are rolled out, we continue to persevere and take the necessary precautions. However, we can now allow ourselves the luxury of looking forward to better and happier times THIS year! And, we can start to make tentative plans for the future without fear. Family get-togethers, dining out with friends, getting back to our favorite pastimes and other normalities are just a few months away. And so is travel.

We are thrilled, excited, and relieved to see that travel is coming back. Here at Madrid & Beyond, we are now receiving a flow of enquires for both Spain and Portugal and a trickle of confirmations. Hooray for all those planning ahead!

Like so many others, we’ve had a tough time during the pandemic, BUT we have braced the storm and are very much looking forward to welcoming you again. We’re here for you and would love to play our part in making your travel dreams come true in 2021. Happy New Year!

One of our favorite museums in Madrid is the Museo Sorolla, a hidden gem and the former home of the Spanish painter who followed the Impressionists.

Born in Valencia in 1863, Sorolla painted beautiful, fleeting moments on the seashore which at this time of year are all the more captivating!
