Maíz Andino, or Tonko as it is called in the Aymara language, is grown on slopes and valles between 1700 and 3800 meters above sea level. Around 1000 BC, corn cultivation was adapted to the highlands over 3000 meters.

Andean maize is characterized by its small size with ears between 4-15 cm long, in a variety of colors: white, yellow, red, blue, gray, and combinations of these colors. Individual ears weigh about 50 grams.

Corn is the main ingredient of traditional Incan cooking, being present in many dishes and drinks, including: apis, laguas, humintas, toasted pasankalla and many others. It was not only used for food though; Chicha (a drink made from corn) was the main ingredient of festivals and rituals. It was considered the elixir of the Incas, who would have been the first to produce it; prepared from the fermentation of carefully selected corn kernels.

Bicimáquinas are pedal-powered blenders, washing machines and threshing machines, eliminating the need for fuel and electricity. Pumps are also possible, and are capable of extracting 30 liters of water per minute from 30-meter deep wells (electronic pumps reach just to 12 meters).

The idea of these ingenious contraptions emerged from the desire to help the farming families of the San Andrés community. The issue that gave rise to Maya Pedal was the expense and shortage of electricity and fuel in the village.

Carlos and Cesar, creators of Maya Pedal, have achieved an extraordinary result: a worthy project that does not pollute and is extremely fascinating in its involvement of volunteers from around the world who are building a fantastic pedal revolution.

Guatemalan NGO Maya Pedal has produced fact sheets and instructions for the more popular designs. They also have some Sketchup models.
