Introduction to Murcia and its Hidden Gems.

Murcia is a region that is often overlooked by tourists who flock to the more popular destinations such as Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia. But what they miss out on is a region that is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Located on the southeastern coast of Spain, Murcia is known for its warm climate, delicious food, and stunning architecture. But there is so much more to this region than what meets the eye.

One of the best things about Murcia is its hidden gems that are waiting to be discovered. From the ancient ruins to the natural parks, there is something for everyone in this region. Whether you are an adventure seeker or a culture vulture, Murcia will not disappoint you. And the best part is that these hidden gems are not crowded with tourists, giving you a chance to explore at your own pace.

One such activity is visiting the medieval town of Caravaca de la Cruz. This town is known for its Holy Cross Sanctuary, which is one of the five holy cities in the world. The sanctuary houses a relic of the Holy Cross, which is said to have healing powers. The town itself is also a delight to explore, with its winding streets, historic buildings, and charming cafes.

We visited Villajoyosa (La Vila Joiosa) last Easter. It is an easy fifteen-minute journey by tram from Benidorm and a one-and-a-half-hour drive from the Mar Menor Golf Resort.

I have to say we really loved the old town with its maze of narrow streets, colourful houses and historic buildings.

It is quite hilly in the old town, so be prepared for a bit of a workout. The golden beaches are gorgeous and the sea is perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants on the seafront offering a variety of cuisines. There’s no shortage of cocktails bars either.

The famous Valor chocolate factory is here. The good news is you can visit and join one of their tours and sample the chocolates.
They have been producing chocolate here since the 18th century.

We witnessed a very grand Good Friday possession that lasted for several hours. Bands, costumes and beautifully decorated statues made their way through the town. The Moors and Christians festival are held in July.

Villajoyosa is Latin for ‘joyful town’ and we certainly found it to be. 😊

A day trip to Cartagena, Murcia.

Cartagena is 20 minutes by car and 30 minutes by train from the Mar Menor Golf Resort. The city has a long and historied past, having been inhabited by various civilisations throughout history. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors and Christians have all left their mark on the city.

Morning: Start your day by visiting the Roman Theatre, which dates back to the 1st century BC. It is one of the most impressive Roman sites in Spain. You can take a guided tour to learn about its history and architecture.

Afterwards, head to the nearby Naval Museum and discover the maritime history and a range of exhibits, including ancient artefacts, naval models and historical documents.

Lunchtime: For lunch, head to the bustling Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where you will find a variety of restaurants serving Spanish cuisine. Try the seafood paella, which is a speciality in the region.

Afternoon: Take a stroll through the city’s historic centre and admire the stunning architecture of the Casa de la Fortuna, a well-preserved Roman villa. Then, visit the Punic Wall, which dates back to the 3rd century BC and is one of the oldest structures in Cartagena.

Next, head to the Regional Museum, which showcases the cultural and historical heritage. Here, you will find exhibits on everything from Roman and Carthaginian artefacts to modern art and photography.

Evening: As the sun sets, head to the Castillo de le Concepción, a 13th-century castle perched on a hill overlooking the city. From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea.

Finally, end the day with a stroll along the Paseo de Alfonso XIII, a beautiful promenade lined with palm trees and street performers. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely dinner at one of the many restaurants, or simply relax and soak up the ambience of this vibrant city.

Family Friendly Mar Menor

The Mar Menor on the Costa Cálida is well known for its beautiful beaches and warm climate. The Mar Menor itself is the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe. Here you can enjoy a variety of water sports, such as paddleboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing and kayaking.

The closest beach to Villa Rosa is in Los Alcázares, only a seven-minute drive. With many more up and down the Mar Menor. These beaches have calm waters and shallow depths, making them safe for children to swim.

Why not explore the natural wonders of Calblanque National Park? Experience the variety of landscapes, from rugged mountains to sandy beaches and the abundance of flora and fauna.

Throughout the summer, there’s a ferry from the beach at Los Alcázares to La Manga. You can spend the day enjoying the beaches of the Med on one side of the road and those of the Mar Menor on the other, all within a few minutes’ walk. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, shops and activities available.

Terra Natura is a zoo and Aqua Natura is the adjoining water park. Only a 90-minute drive from the Villa. You can see a range of animals and there are also water slides, waterfalls, a lazy river and a choice of pools. The park also has a variety of restaurants, snack bars and gift shops.

Cabo de Palos at the southern tip of the Mar Menor is known for its picturesque harbour and lighthouse. Take a boat trip from here to explore the nearby marine reserve. There are numerous restaurants specialising in fresh fish and paellas. Bring your snorkelling gear to get a glimpse of the many varieties of fish and the seahorses. For the more adventurous there are several scuba diving centres in the area.

Mar Menor is, as you can see, is a fantastic destination for families, with a range of activities and attractions to keep everyone entertained.

Scuba diving and snorkelling, Murcia

Some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving sites in Europe can be found a short 35 minutes’ drive from the Mar Menor Golf Resort.

Cabo de Palos, Costa Calida, is on the southern end of the Mar Menor and at the tip of La Manga. La Manga is a strip of land nineteen kilometres long and one hundred metres wide, it is a ‘sleeve’ of land which separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean Sea.

The area is rich in marine life where you can discover seahorses, octopus, eels, eagle rays, groupers, barracudas, mola molas and plenty more species besides.

Some of the best diving spots here are:

• Bajo de la Campana, one of the most important marine archaeological sites in the Murcia region. Among the four vessels lying here is a Phoenician vessel, the largest found in the Murcia area.

• Isla Hormigas are a group of small islands that are home to a variety of marine species. It is known for its clear waters.

• El Farallon is a rocky wall that drops down to a depth of around 40 metres.

• La Laja features a variety of underwater caves and rock formations.

• El Arco is located just off the lighthouse and features a large natural arch.

• El Piles has a series of underwater caves and rock formations.

• Bajo de Fuera is a popular site for experienced divers due to its depth, strong currents and challenging conditions. This is regarded as one of the best dive sites in the Med!

• Cala Fria is popular for snorkelling and a good spot to observe coastal predators such as dentex, gilt-head bream and European seabass.

There are more dive sites to visit in the area and if you enjoy wreck diving there are several sites to visit, including:

• L’illa a French coal transport ship which was hit by a torpedo in the First World War.

• Francoli a Spanish merchant ship which was carrying fertilisers when it was sunk by a U-boat in 1918.

• The wreck of Isla Gomera known as ‘Naranjito’ because it was carrying oranges when it went down in 1946. The Spanish word for oranges is naranjas. This is a shallow dive site, perfect for beginners.

• Stanfield was transporting coal for the Italian army during the First World War and went down in 1915. This is a highly technical dive.

• Carbonera, a 120-metre merchant ship lies at a depth of 44 metres.

There are several dive centres in Cabo de Palos offering guided snorkelling and scuba dives as well as diving lessons, here are a few:

• Scuba Murcia.
• Adventure Divers Spain.
• La Manga Divers.
• Divers Cabo de Palos.
• Naranjito Dive Centre.

For your own safety, always dive with a certified and experienced dive instructor or guide.
