Darkness into Light charity hike rises in strength again!!! From Ireland to Australia communities gather in large numbers, to stand strong and show empathy and support for those with mental health issues.

Saturday May 10th large numbers of our community here are rising in strength to walk into the sunrise, to show solidarity and support for people battling mental health issues. Raising much needed funds and shining a light for those who need it..

Pieta is a mental health charity linked to Afesol Salud Mental here in Spain, providing strength and support for people battling mental health issues.

Join our team to hike to the summit of Cruz de Juanar to watch the most spectacular golden sunrise over the med!!! Standing strong together and showing no one walks alone..!!

Last year showed how strong our community is here on the coast, an incredible turn out with 1000’s of people from all ages walking into the sunrise, with donations over €20,000 raised for Afesol Salud Mental, the Spanish local mental health support & awareness charity.

THE MISSION -

Meeting at 05:45 at La Canada shopping mall entrance, driving to the Refugio de Juanar we will start our approx (6.5km) sunrise ascent under darkness to the Cruz del Juanar summit!

Join our team to watch the sunrise over the med from the mountain summit or donate if you can! Standing strong together! (Will be posting donation link soon!)

If you find this a little challenging there are many strong Darkness into Light walking teams set up along the coast!! 👣👣👣👣

Finishing around 10:00 for very large Irish coffees!!!! (Optional) 😂😂

Head torches at the start of the hike is advisable - (I have 8 available head torches) A decent one can be bought at Decathlon for 15 euros.

Finally the perfect conditions for Malaga’s highest mountain peak, the mighty 2069m La Maroma!

An incredible team tackling the north face Sendero el Robledal route, taking us through impressive mountain pine forests with perfect views towards the snow topped Sierra Nevada, then vast views along the Costa Tropicals coastline!

The rugged wild mountain ranges of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama form a natural frontier between the provinces of Granada and Malaga, the drive itself through the high mountain passes crossing over to the Granada province is very impressive!

Just perfect mountain days last Saturday, followed by Sundays lakeside yoga and meditation with the Trek n Flow tribe! ☀️☀️☀️

The spring wilderness has just been shining with mirrored mountains for our lakeside trails!

The Andalusian outback is truly replenished this spring with the mountain lakes looking spectacular! Hiking deep into the tropical Canada del In****no with the lovely translation of Hells Ravine!

Following a series of ancient Moorish water canals above this vast tropical canyon, with the mountain white washed village of Istan perched on the edge of the Sierra Blanca mountain range. An incredible pueblo with its narrow cobbled streets and mountain water springs throughout the village, surrounded by avocado and lemon trees..

The incredibly priced tapas restaurants of Istan have been a top location for many years for groups from Trekking in Andalucia! Istan plaza is a great little tapas bar in the main square, just perfect mountain spring days with great people!

This Sunday 6th the Trek n Flow tribe will be following the lakeside trails of Istan! 👣👣👣

Finally the Pantano de la Concepcion (Istan lake) is back to its full glory!! With blue sky’s returning for Saturdays trails, the wilderness just shining and Bonelli’s eagles gliding over Istan’s emerald lakes.. This mighty reservoir feeds the whole of the western Costa del Sol..

With the Junta de Andalucia reporting the reservoir has reached between 81.87% and 82.29% of its capacity, it’s looking very strong for the upcoming summer! With the wild Rio Verde river feeding this incredible lake, the hiking trails of this region have played a huge part of the Andalusian outback adventures! 👣👣👣👣

One of the most impressive mountain canyons trails in the Sierra Nevada close to the mountain pueblo of Monachil, the rugged hidden Cahorros de Monachil! With a series of suspension bridges over looking waterfalls and vertical canyon cliff walls, with the Rio Monachil creating a tropical eco system below..

Excellent to be part of this mountain retreat with my good friend Sarina from OXYO kick boxing, yoga and ski retreats, from perfect ski days in the Sierra Nevada to trekking through this wild mountainous territory! Lots of laughs with this amazing team! 👣👣👣

Feels mightily good to be back on the mountain summits again! The 1000 meter plus mountain trails are calling!

A strong team hiking to the mighty summit of Pico Huma often known as the Balcony of Andalucia, through the wild rugged landscape of the Natural Park, Paraje Natural Desfiladero de los Gaitanes.

Eagles soaring over our shoulders with sheer vertical limestone rock faces rising up above the emerald lakes of El Chorro! Making this incredible adventure territory the winter rock climbing capital of Europe!

Our trekking route taking us through the ancient Arabic staircase, thought by archaeologists to be built in the 15C by Mozarabs as a key trading routes.

Finishing in one of favourite traditional Andalusian lakeside restaurants, the quirky just perfect El Mirador!

On the trail of the Knights Templar’s! Hiking through the impressive limestone rock canyon of Tajo del Molino! The views from the high ridges of the canyon over rolling green fields towards Castillo de la Estrella are just immense!

This 15th century castle is the largest in the Malaga province, sitting on a commanding position on the hills above the medieval town of Teba. With strong high defenses surrounding the castle the medieval battles here would have been immense..

With historical accounts of the Scottish knight Sir James Douglas, whilst alongside Scottish Knights Templars who fought in the Battle of Teba in 1330, when he was on the far journey to the crusades with the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce.

Robert the Bruce gave orders on his death bed for his heart to be buried on the crusades. This is where the name Brave heart comes from, when Douglas throws the heart of Bruce in a silver casket forward into the Moorish lines, and calls “go Braveheart and we, your Knights will follow”. Only four Knights Templar’s survive and return to Scotland out of twenty two.

The Scottish history of this region and castle run very deep, the town holds a Scottish festival for two days at the end of August each year, celebrating its Scottish roots!

There’s been a few changes in the schedule due to a little injury! But the throughout February and March the higher mountain trails will resume! 👣👣👣

Just stunning winter hikes through the wild Sierra Blanca mountains! A little late in posting! With the close proximity to the coastline these rugged 1000 meter plus mountain ranges make the ideal super accessible hiking trails!

With the backdrop of the mighty 1,918m La Torrecilla, the highest mountain in the Sierra de las Nieves National park and far reaching views towards the Sierra Nevada, a region rich in history from walking in the footsteps of Roman troops to medieval fortresses! With the two contrasting worlds of the coast and the wild Andalucian outback so close together, this makes the ideal quick to get to adventure territory! 👣👣👣🌿🌿🌿

The first trek of the year through the impressive Sierra Grazalema mountains to the mighty Cueva del Hundidero! This region has a completely different eco system to coast, with rolling green hills with the impressive back drop of vast mountain ranges!

The wild Sierra de Grazalema is home to the largest subterranean labyrinth of caves in Andalucia, the longest being the Hundidero-Gato cave network with 10km of subterranean routes, with a 60 meter entrance deep within a vast tropical gorge.

With a unique tropical eco system, this is why I call this region the jungles of Andalusia! Trekking through this wild rugged mountain canyon is a unique outback experience!

Used as a refuge for hunter gatherers 14000 years ago during the Upper Palaeolithic era, further into these caves show incredible Palaeolithic art work of ancient hunters. Home to the largest bat colony in Spain, the hibernation site for just over 100,000 bats!

The countryside Ventas (rustic roadside restaurants) are just incredible in this region, always buzzing with large groups of Spanish families with just unbeatable prices! Finishing with ice cold beers and tapas in the winter sun is always a winner!

Listening to the wind whistle through the wings of eagles soaring through mountain canyons, on the last day of 2024..

Deep within the hidden jungles of Andalucia! The last trek of the 2024 on New Year’s Eve was just epic!

The mighty Gargante Verde mountain canyon hidden within the Sierra de Grazelema National park is home to the largest protected breeding colony of Griffon vultures in Europe, as Griffon vultures and Bonelli’s eagles circle above under bright winter sun we descend deep into this unique tropical eco system!

To enter this region of the Sierra de Grazalema requires permits, which can be limited and really need to be applied for a month before, this unique tropical canyon trek will be going ahead again before the summer heat arrives!

Hiking in the heart of the Sierra de Las Nieves National park through the mountain canyon of the Barranco de la Rejía! This wild rugged landscape holds the highest waterfall within the Malaga province, the 51 meters cascada de la Rejía! Only flowing outside the summer months, winter hiking on high mountain trails above the Río de los Caballos (river of horses) is just spectacular!
