Een van de meest indrukwekkende hoogtepunten van het Catalaanse binnenland is zonder twijfel het Montserrat gebergte. (Niet te verwarren met het populaire lettertype Montserrat.) Een schitterend gevormde bergrug van zo’n 10 kilometer lang en 5 kilometer breed met een hoogste piek van 781 meter. Even bijzonder als de vorm van de rotsen is het gelijknamige klooster dat daar sinds 1400 verborgen ligt tegen de iconische berg en nu een trekpleister is voor wandelaars en cultuurliefhebbers. Het klooster is tevens een soort kruispunt waar talloze bekende wandelroutes elkaar ontmoeten. De bekendste is die naar Santiago de Compostela. De plek is uitsluitend te voet of met de speciale tandradbaan te bereiken, die al sinds de 19e eeuw pelgrims naar het klooster brengt.
