Good Friday. Procession in Órgiva with the Virgen de los Dolores. Almost the end of Holy Week when the village is always busy. People have holidays and often spend them with family. With the Octet Vocal Alpujarra, we sang passion music in several churches. That was another beautiful experience.

Enjoy my video of the garden. It is such a delight to see the plants flourishing, not easy in the heat and drought. I am thankful for the water of our acequia.

4/4/2018. Today 5 years ago we left our beautiful farm in Boekelo and started our journey to Órgiva, Andalusía. Not easy to leave my loved ones behind and start this new adventure. And an adventure it is. Living in a small village in the mountains, learning a new language and meeting so many new people. All in all it is a great life here. We cherish the 24 years we lived on the farm and enjoy tremendously our life under the Andalusian sun.

After a fairly cold winter it seems that spring has arrived. Lots of work in the garden to do. Starting up the pool again. And of course: painting. Always painting jobs in Andalucia. But with these temperatures it’s a pleasure to work outside and get the place ready for the season.

The water running down towards our garden. Before al this happens Rik climbed up the mountain to open up the gate. This is a serious cardiac exercise. 🧗🏻‍♀️💪🏻💪🏻👏👏

We open our small iron gate and use a plank to direct the water towards our channel running down.

The almond trees are flowering. Such a pretty site. Where ever you go you see these pink and white flowering trees which will give nuts in July/August.
Many if you who have been here know that we get water for the land from waterways, acequias , which run high op de mountain. Dug in the 8th century and still a brilliant system. Al through the Alpujarras these Acequias provided us with the melted snow from the Sierra Nevada. In the following video’s you see how the water runs down to our place. I love monday mornings when we have waterrights.

We had a great afternoon in Málaga. Lunch at Bodega El Pimpi is a wonderful experience. The food is very tasty and as you can see on the photo’s it is a beautiful decorated place. We went to see the Christmas lights at Calle Larios. We were not the only ones! And after that we even saw a video show which was projected on the cathedral. 🎄

I did’t post anything for such a long time. But after a busy summer with some wonderful guests we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. There was great food by Mike Caplan, music by Leye Obiyemi. It was such a joy to celebrate this with with our children, grandson and friends and neighbours. The Cortijo looked so romantic with all the lights on and the new patio we built at the back was in full use by our cook and his equipe. A memorable evening!

For me and the garden May is the best month of the year. The garden is full of colour. The nights are still fresh and the days are warm and sunny. The evenings seem the last forever and I love working in my garden once the sun has set and the temperatures drop. Enjoy the pictures of the flowers of our garden.

Cleaning windows is a waste of time as is cleaning all the white walls of our Cortijo. The Calima, as the wind from the Sahara is called, is back and the house and garden are brown once more. I guess white is very overrated. So why are all the houses here white???

So this is what happens when Sahara dust comes down with the rain.
Our beautiful white house is covered with brown, sticky silt.
It can only be removed with a powerful high pressure cleaner. After that it is time for painting. How about a brown sandy kind of colour??

Yesterday we made a 9 km hike on the Sierra de Lugar. It was a cloudy day and often we were in the clouds or above them. And than we came across this ruin what must once have been a beautiful farmhouse on top of the hill with vieuws of the Sierra Nevada. It al felt very mysterious. It rained a little but by far not enough to fill the reservoir.

A promotion video of our home town Órgiva. Only 4 km from our cortijo. A place full of life with many bars, restaurants, shops and markets. A place where many nationalities and many different religions live together in harmony. A unique town in the foothills ( La Alpujarra) of the Sierra Nevada. So pleased to live here.

About us:

We, Rik and Henriette Quartero are since 7-7-2017 the proud owners of Cortijo Quartero, a beautiful renovated Andalusian farmhouse in Tijola, Orgiva, which is in the heart of the mountain-range la Alpujarra in Andalusia, Spain. We have three self-catering holiday apartments for rent which are situated in the older part of the building. They are all fully airconditioned and heated bij log fires or infra red heating. Our Cortijo is using renewable energie by solar panels.

The house is hidden in the valley of Rio Guadalfeo which runs in between the mountains of the Sierra de Lujar and the Sierra Nevada. The views from the house at the mountains surrounding it are spectacular.

It is in an ideal location for cycling, mountain biking, hiking ( it is on de GR 142) horse riding or relaxing at our fabulous salt water pool. Te ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada are 1 1/2 hours driving whilst the nearest beach is only 30 minutes by car.

The house is 4 km away from Orgiva, where you will find several supermarkets, many tapas bars and restaurants. There is also an emergency medical centre ( 24 hour).
