Tools and sharp objects are often something parents keep away from children until they are old enough or responsible enough. BUT children who learn to use tools as early as possible, under your guidance, will be able to manage their own projects in the future.
This encourages and inspires more creative thinking and the ability to problem solve 🧡 Self directed is a way of life!

Cortijo Serendipia is in a peaceful rural setting and Shepherd's Rest is on the edge of Oria village. The properties are only a 6 minute drive apart, allowing families time to mix in the shared communal areas.
A car is always necessary at Serendipia, and useful at Shepherd’s Rest as there are so many amazing places to visit in the local & wider areas in Andalucia 🇪🇸

Worldschooled children often have more agency in their lives because their education is flexible, self-directed, and shaped by real-world experiences. They have more control over what, when, and how they learn, allowing them to explore their interests and make decisions about their education. This autonomy fosters independence, critical thinking, and a sense of responsibility, giving them greater involvement in shaping their own lives.

We were thrilled to welcome the A New Life In The Sun team back last August! It's amazing to reflect on how the seed of our Worldschool vision continues to grow and blossom. This was just 10 months after the purchase of Cortijo Serendipia.
We're excited to share all that this special place in Andalucía has to offer.
From the beautiful surroundings to the family-centered culture, we're grateful to be able to host others and see the relationships of both children and adults flourish.

‘5 Benefits To Slacklining’
When we first moved to Spain in the summer of 2015, we did a lot of slacklining. We set up almost everyday, at this exact spot by the municipal pool, and practiced continually.
It’s a very social activity, a great icebreaker with the local children…sometimes even the parents would give it a go!
It’s very difficult to learn initially, but that’s what makes it so gratifying when you accomplish your first walk across the line.

Last year we changed our minimum stay to 1 month. This might seem odd to some people, but it allows parents and children to be able to make real connections. Families get the chance to feel what a supportive worldschooling community feels like.
Friendships are made without the boundary of being from the same school year. Also the same goes for adults; we have had parents in their 20s to early 60s…we all have one thing in common, to live a life that puts our family unit first.

Shepherd’s Rest & Cortijo Serendipia are run together as one. They are two traditional Spanish farmhouses, which make up 7 family apartments and our family home.
Shepherd’s Rest is in Oria village, with all amenities within 10 minutes walk. This includes 4 convenience stores, 5 bar/restaurants, 2 butchers, 2 bakeries, 2 play parks, 24hr medical centre, post office, pharmacy, gym, sports ground, municipal swimming pool (July/August) and a weekly market.
Cortijo Serendipia is 6 minutes drive from Shepherd’s Rest and Oria village.
Supermarkets, indoor pool, bowling, sports clubs, parks and many restaurants and tapas bars are within 25 minutes drive in the local towns of Albox and Olula Del Rio.
This is a place for connecting with your children and other families. We provide communal spaces for both work and play. These areas are free to use for parents and children.

Feels like summer 2024
We drove over to the peaceful Piscifactoría Las Fuentes, nestled in the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park, Granada 🌿🐟 This spot offers serene pools of fresh spring water, local trout delicacies. A perfect place to unwind in lush natural surroundings. Someone caught their first fish! We later prepared the fish and cooked them at the shared BBQ.
