Today we celebrate “the day of the Balearics” and if you didn’t know, it commemorates the acknowledgement of the archipielago as an “regional province”, which basically means that some political decisions that affect us all are taken from citizens that live here and have the same concerns, in terms of economy, education, health care, and other matters.
But what this celebration really enhances, is what puts us together in terms of traditions and local culture. The “Balearic feeling” is very difficult to explain even for the locals, since every island experiences it in a very different way. Anyhow, among the many traditions of this beautiful territory there is one that the kids, and not so much kids anymore, love: the Giants, known as the ”Gegants and Gegantesas”.
These curious characters date back to the seventeenth century. It is surprising to know that they were born as a religious “short play” to be performed at the Corpus Christi Procession with the intention to educate the believers. The Giant referred to “Goliat and David myth" and the defeat of evil. Eventually, these figures ended up being so popular that they were adopted by most villages on Mallorca as a part of their folklore.
The first giant known on the island was “Puput”, and it participated in the festivities of the village of San LLorenç in 1762.
My two favourite ones are Tofol and Francinaina, the giants that you can see in Palma City Hall at the foot of the staircase. The original ones were ordered 1904 to the ceramic factory of “La Roqueta”, and unfortunately they disappeared when they were loaded on a boat for transport to Barcelona. The town hall ordered the fabrication of another couple, exact copies, that were exposed outside the city hall, an unfortunate decision, which led to a total destruction of these gentile and peaceful giants. But because we loved these guys so much, a new couple was ordered, in 1961, and these are the ones we can admire nowadays. They are enormous, some 4.2 meters (13.78 feet) and they are made out of carton paper, wicker and wood. Very heavy raw material, that is why- poor souls- they never participate in parades.
During the spanish civil war, this tradition was almost lost but from the 1980s and especially in the 1990s almost every village created new giant couples, mainly related to the local agriculture tradition. And they parade them, not only on their local festivities but also in Palma, the capital. Last time was in September, 2019 where the “Trobada de Colles de Gegants” took place. More than 30 figures of Giants and more than 300 participants from all over the island, including musicians, “the Xeremiers”, who play a sort of ancient flute called “flabiol”.
It is amazing to see them parade, with that explosion of color and richness in the costumes and of course, the skills in carrying around such enormous characters. The festivity was very cheap cheerful for all, especially for the kids that looked at them astonished. We all hope to see them back soon, parading and bringing us some familiar “back to normal” atmosphere.
Happy day of the Balearics, for all!!
