St. Augustine City Archaeologist Dr. Andrea White to Provide Context at screening of
Xueta Island

St. Augustine City Archaeologist Andrea White will provide context for the St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society’s screening of the award-winning documentary Xueta Island about the crypto-Jews among the Baleric Islands. Evidence is strong that crypto-Jews came to St. Augustine from New Smyrna Beach along with many other Menorcans in 1777. Descendants of those crypto-Jewish Menorcans live in St. Augustine to this very day.

The St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society will screen the award-winning documentary film Xueta Island at the St. Augustine Waterworks, 184 San Marco Ave, St. Augustine, FL 32084 on Thursday, January 30, 2025. This event is open to the public at no charge, all are welcome. The 4:00 pm 63 minute screening will be followed by a commentary and discussion with Andrea White, City Archaeologist for St. Augustine.

Since 2017, Andrea White has been the City Archaeologist for St. Augustine, Florida. Andrea specializes in urban and historical archaeology with 25 years of experience in the field. She began her career in St. Augustine before spending more than a decade in New Orleans where she was the director of the Greater New Orleans Archaeology Program based at the University of New Orleans and later worked as a liaison between the Louisiana Division of Archaeology and FEMA; working with the recovery process associated with the 2005 hurricanes. She took her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Florida, earned a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from the College of William and Mary, and holds a doctorate from the Department of Geography and Anthropology from Louisiana State University.

What an absolute pleasure to finally see a dream become a reality. Thirty tourism professionals specialized in Spain’s Jewish heritage came together in Soria, Spain from eleven different cities around the country. We connected with one another, we learned about Soria’s rich Jewish heritage together, and we planted the seeds of future collaborations. The energy of the weekend was filled with innovation, excitement, hope and optimism.

Itzhak Ben Avraham is a lawyer, historian and coordinator of the Moisés de León Documentation Center, whose best showcase is the Sefardies.es portal, an information platform on Sephardic culture and history in which a powerful search engine allows access to thousands of references on the topic. His collection houses over 3000 (yes, you read that correctly) books on Sephardic history. At the Casa de León located in his apartment in Madrid, Isaac spoke to me about surnames, a possible sign of belonging or descending from converted Jewish families. But not all is so easy. Secrets of Jewish Majorca

Jewish Majorca was created to help revive the once prominent Jewish community of the Balearic Islands. In 2014 we moved to Majorca (also know in spanish as Mallorca ) and met the local Conversos who shared with us stories and secrets of their Jewish heritage. We strive to bring together members of the current Jewish community from their many different backgrounds. We also program seminars and conferences open to Jews and non-Jews alike to learn together about the richness and diversity of Jewish history and culture. By offering a walk and talk experience with members of the local active Jewish community today – visitors get to see the past, present, and hopefully the future from another point of view.
