Itzhak Ben Avraham is a lawyer, historian and coordinator of the Moisés de León Documentation Center, whose best showcase is the Sefardies.es portal, an information platform on Sephardic culture and history in which a powerful search engine allows access to thousands of references on the topic. His collection houses over 3000 (yes, you read that correctly) books on Sephardic history.

At the Casa de León located in his apartment in Madrid, Isaac spoke to me about surnames, a possible sign of belonging or descending from converted Jewish families.

But not all is so easy. Are there Sephardic surnames?

Full day finale!
We grab food in the Olivar Market, where a new falafel and hummus shop was opened by an Israeli family on the island. Finally we visit the Olive Oil Plaza where there is a plaque that Carla and Dani helped to install noting the 18 trees that were donated to the city on October 7, 1988 by the Jewish National Fund and the Jewish community of Mallorca.
BONUS! You can add on a visit to the Cuevas de Genova to admire the gorgeous natural elements.

Full day experience highlight part 2!

We saw Plaza Gomila where the Memorial to the victims of the Mallorquin Inquisition stands that was placed in 2018.
Of course we visited many friends along the way, like Miquel Aguilo who showed us his impressive family tree full with only Chueta last names, and saw his haberdashery that has been in his family since 1685.
We also saw an oven that was constructed in the year 1652 at the Fiol Bakery.

A secret history of Jewish heritage on the Spanish island of Mallorca is exhumed in this intriguing investigation. Before the Inquisition was established, Jews on Mallorca were forcibly converted to Catholicism. Yet many still practiced Judaism in secret. These Crypto-Jews and their Catholic descendants later known as Xuetas, suffered centuries of discrimination. Today, as Jewish life slowly returns to the Balearic Islands, a stifled minority is reintroduced to half-remembered culture and traditions handed down under duress across generations. This illuminating film seeks to reconcile the painful past with a vision of a brighter, more inclusive future.

Thanks to the summer camp I went to called Young Judea, I met Jo Bork.

Decades later, Jo recommended us to Jeff Jacobson, who came on a cruise with his family.

We took them on our full day Jewish heritage experience, where we enjoyed the views from Bellver Castle and saw the home where Ernst and Helene Heinemann lived- Germans Jews that were escaping the N***s and lived in Mallorca during the 1930s.

That’s just a taste of the cultural immersion that happens during our full day experience. Stay tuned for more highlights this week!

Here is a clip from founder Dani Rotstein and his wife and son as they explore Recife, Brasil’s Jewish roots during Pesach 2022. They happened to walk by a building with Hebrew on it and look what they found inside!

What a week it has been! This past week we had the great honor of having well over 200 young boys and girls in our walk and talk experiences of the Jewish Quarter of Palma. We were able to talk them about the importance of the power of education and how it is our duty to know our history in order not to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. Thank you to @ib3 for joining us and for all their valuable help. Secrets of Jewish Majorca

Jewish Majorca was created to help revive the once prominent Jewish community of the Balearic Islands. In 2014 we moved to Majorca (also know in spanish as Mallorca ) and met the local Conversos who shared with us stories and secrets of their Jewish heritage. We strive to bring together members of the current Jewish community from their many different backgrounds. We also program seminars and conferences open to Jews and non-Jews alike to learn together about the richness and diversity of Jewish history and culture. By offering a walk and talk experience with members of the local active Jewish community today – visitors get to see the past, present, and hopefully the future from another point of view.
