Pego is a delightful, historic market town, perfectly located between the Marina Alta mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. It stands midway between Valencia and Alicante and approximately 1 hour 15 minutes’ drive from both airports, and is easily accessible just 15 minutes off the coastal motorway.
Lying a few minutes inland from the bustling, fortified port town of Denia, Pego is surrounded by the terraced mountains of the Vall d`Ebo. These are well worth exploring, by car, foot or bike – criss-crossed by ancient Moorish donkey tracks that lead to wells, castles and abandoned settlements, all against a backdrop of awe-inspiring scenery.
It enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. With easy access to beaches at Oliva and Denia, Pego has the best of both worlds providing a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of tourism on the coast.
Pego is steeped in traditional Spanish culture and is renowned for its fiestas, with festivals and celebrations throughout the year. These range from the pointed hats and religious icons of the late night pre-easter parades to the legendary mock battles of the Moors and Christians in June.
The town has an abundance of excellent restaurants providing all types of cuisine from traditional tapas and paellas to pizza or curry.
There can be nothing more relaxing than sitting in the Plaza de la Font on a balmy summer evening sipping wine and just watching the world pass by.
All of this is just 10 minutes’ walk from the apartment.
