Es la localidad turística que ha tenido un desarrollo turístico más tardío. Su expansión se ha registrado en la última década del pasado siglo XX y en los primeros años del XXI. De las tres grandes zonas turísticas de Lanzarote, Playa Blanca es la única con un topónimo natural y originario que tuvo a un pequeño pueblo de familias pescadoras y salineras entre sus primeros pobladores, asentados durante la segunda década del siglo XX. Antes de Playa Blanca la cercana Papagayo fue más poblada , perteneciente ambas al que fuera municipio independiente de Femés.
