There is no doubt that these are worrisome and dangerous times. Lately, it seems like we are constantly faced with great challenges, such as, climate change, natural disasters, mass shootings, political, racial, and social wars, gender violence and discrimination, along with the daily stress of life, work, and family. I think with so much ugly out there, we sometimes forget to find the love, the beauty, the strength and the brave that life can be. Everyday, ordinary people do amazing, even heroic things for the good of you, me, and society as a whole. These people, these actions, often go unnoticed, unappreciated.
As most of you know, I am a Canadian, who together with my family, lives in Spain. A country which is in a state of alarm due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are on lock down, with access only to primary essentials, such as supermarkets and pharmacies. In these scary and unsecure times, it is easy to focus on all the bad. As a small company dedicated to the tourist industry we were hit hard by many cancellations, we were saddened watching people hoard goods, leaving others without basic necessities, we were and are at loss, without the freedom we so often take for granted, to go where we please when we please, and worse of all we are saddened by the fear we saw and continue to see, the fear of the human touch, in a Country and culture where touching is as essential as the air we breathe. However, in all of this ugliness and fear, I got to experience a moment. One of those moments that make you believe again, feel again, love again and be proud to be alive. A couple of nights ago with the help of social media, WhatsApp, and texts, a call was sent out to everyone across Spain to open their windows, at 10:00 PM and to applaud. To applaud the healthcarers, the supermarket employees, the pharmacists and the carriers of these goods. To applaud those individuals who are putting themselves at risk everyday, who are working extra hours, extra shifts for the good of you, me and society as a whole. I am sharing a short video from my home town Pontevedra, to hopefully share the hope, the belief, the love and the pride I feel to be alive.
Stay safe, be safe and remember to be thankful!

The Camino de Santiago, known in English as the Way of St. James, is a pilgrimage leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, where the remains of the saint are buried.

The Camino dates back to medieval times when the scallop was used to symbolise the completion of one's pilgrimage. At present, the scallop, is used to mark the paths showing the way to Santiago de Compostela.

In 2019, more than 350 000 people received a certificate, known as the Compostela, upon completion of their pilgrimage.

The year 2021 will be a holy year, the first holy year since 2010. The holy year is marked when July 25th, St. James Day falls on a Sunday.

The holy year is known as Xacobeo. During Xacobeo, the holy door will remain open from midnight on December 31,2020 and continue to remain open until midnight on December 31,2021, when it will close until the next holy year in 2027.

Many pilgrims follow its routes as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth. The pilgrimage follows various routes. The second most popular is that known as The Portuguese Way.

The Portuguese Way is comprised of either the traditional route or the coastal route. These routes also have various alternative paths.

Today, we are featuring photos from the Variant Spiritual Way, in particular the stage known as Water and Stone.

The path takes you from outside of Pontevedra along the coast to the seaport town of Combarro, up to the 12th century Monastery of Armenteira, through the Salnés valley and over to Vilanova de Arousa, where you finalise the path with a boat ride over to Pontecesures to rejoin the traditional Portuguese Way.

CASTLE OF CASTRO CALDELAS.

In the centre of the village of Castro Caldelas we find the castle, which belonged to the counts of Lemos to defend their domains. Although you can reach close by car, you can leave your car in the square “Plaza del Prado” and go up walking through the old town.
The castle looks like being in the place of a previous building. However, the current one was built in the 14th century by D. Pedro Fernández de Castro. As most of the Galician castles, it was partially destroyed in the middle of the 15th century during the Revuelta Irmandiña and rebuilt later.
It has a double wall of great thickness. Three towers are placed against the exterior wall. The inner wall is topped with battlements.
We access to the castle through a door on which there are the counts of Lemos´ coats of arms (on the right, the wolves of the Osorio; on the left, at the top, the castle and lion rampant of the Enríquez, and at the bottom, the six roundels of the Castro). To the left of the door, you can see a copy of a catapult. As soon as we go into, we find the inner ward. In the background is the aljibe (a system of collecting rain water for the use of castle) and next to it, a pottery kiln.
From here, you can go up to the round walk of the inner wall. At the end of the stairs, we can see the clock tower which is the oldest. It preserves the machinery which starts the clock. The keep is defending the front door. It was the symbol of the stately power and the last bastion in case of siege. From the terrace you can see a beautiful view of the valley of the river Sil. In the 16th century it became a palace with a large living room. Windows with parladoiros (stone seats by the windows for people to talk) were opened in its walls and a great passage was built.
During the War of Independence, neighbours set it on fire in reprisal against the French, in 1809.
In the 18th century, the County of Lemos, passes through distant kinship to the House of Alba.

Galicia is home of over 1,660 km (1,030 mi) of coastline with over 44 working lighthouses. Along with their use as a guiding light some of these lighthouses offer amazing views and have interesting facts regarding them. The Tower of Hércules, for instance, is the only working lighthouse that dates back to Roman times. The lighthouse of Finisterre, was once thought of as the end of the world, as it is the most western point of Europe. Finisterre, offers amazing sunsets and is a major part of the world renowned pilgrimage St. James Way (Camino de Santiago).
Today, we are featuring the lighthouse in Estaca de Bares, on the Coruña coastline. The area offers an amazing view of the precise spot where the Atlantic and Cantabrian Sea meet. The area has recently undergone improvements and has been featured in the Schusev Museum of Architecture in Moscow for Public Spaces and Sustainability.

From the lookout point in Pontevedra on an early morning walk, I am reminded how mystical Galicia can be!
And, as I wonder out and see all its non-uniform landscapes, all its ups and downs and twists and turns, I am reminded, that I once was told that in many parts of the world the roads are all planned and formed and then the houses are built, making for organised and efficient urban planning.
Whereas in Galicia, the houses were all built and the communities were all formed and then the roads were fit in between it all,
making for some very interesting drives and some pretty amazing views!

The Pazo de Oca is probably the most representative of the Pazos of Galicia.

It is located in La Estrada in the provenice of Pontevedra.

It's spectacular gardens can be visited and its layout, from the eighteenth century, is a reinterpretation of the French landscape tradition. The baroque play of the gardens angles and flow of water is combined with granite and unusual plant species.

The Pazo de Oca belongs to the Casa Ducal de Medinaceli Foundation.

As Catedrais Beach translates as 'Beach of the Cathedrals'. It is the touristic name of Praia de Augas Santas 'Beach of the Holy Waters'.
The characteristics features of the beach are its natural arches and caves, which can be seen only in low tide. During which time you can access and walk through the slate formed arches reaching 30 meters in height and resembling cathedral flying buttresses, large caves, sand corridors and other geologic features.
It has recently been declared a Natural Monument.

Baiona, is a seaport town with a medieval historical center found in the southern part of Galicia. It is part of the Portuguese Coastal Way for the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimmage (St. James Way) and its population triples during the summer months. Here we can find the Monterreal Castle, a replica of Columbus' ship La Pinta, which landed in Baiona on one of its return journeys from America, the monument of "Virxe da Rocha", made of granite and marble with a spiral staircase set in a park overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. A little further way down the coast is the 12th century Monastary of Oia, which offers great views and a very special tranquility. Continuing on our coastal tour and 341 meters above sea level we find the Castro of Santa Trega (a Castro-Roman settlement) dating from 100 BC to 100 AD. The Galician fort and archaeological site which overlooks the river Miño which divides Galicia, Spain with Portugal offers spectacular views and is one of Galicia's most popular sites to visit. All part of our South Galicia - North Portugal Tour.

Bonfires of Saint John (San Juan) celebrating the Summer Solstice with a night of fire.......tonight in Spain.
Collecting medicinal plants including: Rosemary, Lemon grass, Elder, St John's wart, dog rose and Rue......in relation to purifying, health, youth, beauty, and warding off evil spirits and witches......placing the plants in water before sundown, letting the night mist cover them, and washing your face in the early morning. Ancient Pagan beliefs, traditions, and legends. Building bonfires at midnight, jumping over them 3 times for luck, and crying "Meigas Fora" ( witches away and out). oh yea..by the way..... it is great fun and also very beautiful! Thank you Jackie for sharing!

Corpus Christi Festival is a Christian festival where Christians honor the Holy body of the Christ. It is also known as Corpus Domini, which is a Latin term meaning "Body and Blood of Jesus". .... During this festival streets are decorated with art made from flower petals. It truly is quite a sight to be seen. These photos are from the streets of Redondela, a town between Vigo and Pontevedra and on route of the pilgrimage Camino de Santiago, Portuguese Way.
