Morning at the edge of the olive grove. Over the years a few guests have commented how our olive grove looks messy compared to the neatly ploughed groves that surround us. This year I hope people are starting to understand the part ploughing plays in releasing carbon, impairing soil health and reducing biodiversity. Despite the pressure to conform to local land management habits we have stuck to our guns. The result is masses of wildflowers in spring, reduced water loss and soil erosion, greater carbon capture, increased soil health and local wildlife. When the rains finally come our soil will stay in place.

Unfinished business - an abandoned hydro-electric dam near Montejaque. Image by the very fabulous Built in 1924, in less than 9 months, the dam was the largest of its kind at 74 m high. There was only one little problem - it leaked! This is such an amazing location it is, like so much of the Serranía de Ronda, spectacular but unknown.

Evening light through the olive. When we bought Finca El Olivar there was no olive tree in the drive, nor an oleander hedge. We took inspiration from the romantic up the road when we planted the oleanders and they have been a great success. The tree was craned into place one very, very hot August morning as we headed off to a Sherry tasting in Jerez.
