Come and join me at the Global Birdfair next weekend at the Castilla and Leon stand 62 in the Robin marquee!
I'll be representing nature tourism in the province of Salamanca: a fabulous, little known and greatly under-visited biodiversity hotspot for birds, butterflies, flora and nature in general.
Come and have a chat and I'll tell you all about it!

Some of the butterflies I encountered today in the Sierra de Bejar, Salamanca, the ones that stayed still long enough for me to photograph them 😁 : Marbled fritillary, Iberian marbled white, Heath fritillary, Knapweed fritillary, and Esper's marbled white. I saw two lovely Southern white admirals but they were too fast for me! More tomorrow...

Ever seen a Spanish sparrow pulling his tongue out? Now's your chance!
He's one of three pairs currently nesting on our house: using the guttering, the electric wiring and the Solar panel box as supports for their rather messy (in this case) grass ball nests.

We were thrilled to find the Bug orchid Orchis coriophora this morning in the north of the Sierras de Bejar and Francia Biosphere Reserve. It's a new one for us, which I suspected might be around one of the slate landscapes we frecuent.

This morning in the Biosphere Reserve of Sierras de Bejar y Francia...
It's always deeply satisfying to see birds often heard but hidden from view: we managed to observe at leisure Turtle dove, Golden Oriole and Nightingale.
The wild flowers were spectacular too: a treat for the eyes.

On Sunday we spent the morning being entertained by Nightingale, Golden oriole, Bonelli's warbler, Subalpine warbler and many more birds, lizards, butterflies and flora in the village of Pinedas, with its exuberant vegetation, between the Sierras of Bejar and Francia in the Biosphere Reserve of the same name.

This morning we had some great views of Rock sparrow (you can just see it's yellow rectangle in the digiscoped image) Blue rockthrush, Black and Griffon vulture, Booted eagle, as well as Iberian and Woodchat shrikes, a sky full of Swifts, Crag and House martin and Swallows, a singing Hoopoe, Lesser spotted woodpecker, Little ringed plover and Sandpiper and lots more in Puente del Congosto. We also saw Linaria spartea, Astragalus incanus and Ornithogalum concinnum, all three endemic to Spain and the first two regional endemics.
All in all a very full morning.
Tomorrow we'll be in Pinedas, village between the Sierras of Bejar and Francia.

A windy walk yesterday brought a sudden apparition above my head over our old vegetable plot: three black vultures and one Griffon. Here's a black and griffon together, you can see the difference in size and shape quite clearly.

Really interesting talk by Tessa Boase, journalist and campaigner, at the FIO Birdfair in Monfragüe yesterday. Her investigations into the ALL FEMALE origins of the RSPB, how she doggedly researched and unearthed the lives of Etta Lemon and Emily Williamson, and their respective and common battle against the hat fashion and it's horrific feather trade between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. About 10 years ago, with at first little and begrudging support and even less interest on behalf of this powerful, mainly male run organisation, Tessa dug through archives and made parallel investigations into the founding of the RSPB and discovered that the history of it's founding 'mothers' had been simply forgotten, (or, more likely buried). After the talk David Lindo The Urban Birder interviewed Tess, who also featured as one of his guests in his "In Conservation with..." series in 2021, which you can see here https://t.ly/g1I8
