Feliz Día de los Reyes

Los Reyes Magos

January 6th, the 12th day of Christmas, in the bible, the day the 3 wise men reached Bethlehem and gave the gifts of
Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to baby Jesus.

Here in Spain, the 3 wise men are known as Los Reyes Magos (the magical or wizard kings)
Melchor, Galspar & Baltasar, and January 6th is an important public holiday in Spain.
Traditionally, rather than writing a letter to Santa, Spanish children write their letters to the Kings and post them in a special postbox set up in most towns & villages especially for this purpose.
On the eve of Los Reyes Magos, 5th January it is tradition across Spain for the 3 Kings to arrive in each town and village (by whatever means....train, car, boat, horseback, camelback etc) and parade the streets on special floats throwing treats to the crowds who line the streets to greet them. In many towns & cities this has become a huge parade and celebration with lots of different floats preceeding the Kings (known as a cabalgata)
Afterwards, the children hurry home to polish their shoes and leave them on the doorstep in anticipation of receiving their gifts.
6th January is then a special family day, where parents watch their children unwrap their second load of presents in as many weeks. There is much eating and drinking and the traditional cake is the Roscon de Reyes, a large circular, donut shaped sweet bread sprinkled with sugar and dried fruits and usually stuffed with cream. Embedded inside is are little plastic figures, including a king or queen and whoever finds this is Monarch for the day, meaning they are entitled to be waited on hand and foot. Hidden inside the cake is also a bean, the unfortunate recipient of which has to buy the Roscon the following year.

6th January also signifies the end of the festive period and everyone goes back to work until the next holiday....which in Spain, is never too far away.
