GEOGRAPHIC NORTH POLE EXPEDITION - 2002
🎬 VIDEO: GEOGRAPHIC NORTH POLE EXPEDITION - 2002
►On April 14 at 13:00 (Spanish peninsular time) after a week skiing among the drifting ice of the Arctic Ocean, the international expedition between which was the Canary Islander José Manuel Naranjo reached the Geographic North Pole, which becomes this way, the first inhabitant of Canary Island to reach this mythical point.
The international expedition consisted of 3 Russians, 1 Belgian, 1 Venezuelan and 4 Spaniards (2 from Vitoria, 1 from Cantabria and 1 from Canary Islands).
The point reached, the Geographic North Pole, is the only place on Earth where all the directions are South and where all the terrestrial meridians meet. It is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, which is the most rugged and changing place on earth.
The starting point of the expedition was not an immobile northern land, but the Russian temporary station "Borneo" located on an ice floe drifting in the middle of the Arctic Ocean at 89º North latitude.
This base was reached on April 8, 2002 after a 4-hour flight that departed from the Siberian population of Khatanga. From the drifting base a helicopter droped the expedition members off at the definitive point of departure of the expedition at 89 ° 14 'North 104 ° 53' East.
During the week that lasted the crossing They had to advance on the sea pack ice in constant motion, surrounded by a multitude of compression ridges and channels of open water. All the equipment, food and fuel carried on an individual sleds of about 50 Kg that each expedition member had to drag through this rugged terrain.
Although the hardest of the expedition, it was not the physical effort of skiing and sometimes walking dragging a sleigh, but it was the extreme temperatures that had to endure those that hardened the journey. The temperature range was from 37 ° C below zero to 26 ° C below zero, with the normal temperature being 35 ° C below zero.
Even worse were the days when the wind blew, in which the the
