No dig gardening requires a ton of organic material we just dont have - so washed up seaweed is the perfect mulch.
Fortunately going to collect it is the perfect excuse to visit our "secret beach" on the Strait of Gibraltar, and have a quick dip.
The 16th century Tower of Guadelmesi is a 20 minute drive (not for the faint hearted!) or a couple of hours' hike from our place through the military zone. Now marked as part of the Camino de Santiago, it is an impressive part of the coast with Morocco as a backdrop.

La Torre de Guadelmesi del siglo 16, está a 20 minutos en auto (¡no para los débiles de corazón!) o a un par de horas de caminata desde nuestro lugar a través de la zona militar. Ahora marcado como parte del Camino de Santiago, es una parte impresionante de la costa con Marruecos como telón de fondo.

We had our first electric hiring guest who, due to such a lack of demand, got his 8 day hire for under 30€ - in total!! He made the most of free charging on the beach and @base and couldn't have been happier with his choice.
We are thrilled that it is even possible to rent electric, but guess this ridiculous offer will only last as long as the scepticism...
Since we got our MG4 EV, we have been surprised how many charging stations there are, and how long the range lasts.
Anyway the need to plan our longer trips slightly in advance adds an element of adventure and surprise for us rather than an inconvenience....having to stop and have lunch with the petrol money while the car charges hardly seems like a hardship.
There are lots of concerns about the batteries, contamination etc, but with solar powered charging and the amount we use it, we feel the investment was more than worth it and will bring us to 0 emissions within just a few years. The batteries will just get added to our solar system once they are no longer strong enough for the car (which could be decades with good care).

We did as our neighbours did and planted cane all around the borders over 20 years ago. It served it's purpose as a wind break but now the garden is so well established, and the trees are mature, we are no longer so dependant on it.
Quite the opposite, this invasive plant spreads its tubers amazingly fast and sucks up an awful lot of precious water.
It also gets so tall it obscures the wonderful view to Morocco poking up over the hills on the Strait of Gibraltar.
We will leave enough to use for kindling and trellises but now the digging has begun I know it will be hard to stop!!
It has such a pervasive root system it managed to grow up through a metre of wood chip mulch and layers of plastic. We have to get every last chunk out.
