Since Christmas we have been focusing on the veggie garden - making new beds, and putting into practice all the information gleaned over the year. 🤯 Determined to make #nodig work in a climate very different to the one featured in all the online examples I find, trial and error have lead me to some conclusions. Namely focus on the soil composition before planting anything, make as much compost as possible, and dig when you have to but as little as possible. Let's see how it pans out.... A las lombrices no les molesta la sal de las algas, y a la tierra tampoco. Como no lo cavamos, se hace una manta protectora contra el sol, reteniendo humedad, y poco a poco aportando nutrientes mientras se descompone. 🇬🇧The worms don't mind the salt from the seaweed, and neither does the soil. No dig gardening requires a ton of organic material we just dont have - so washed up seaweed is the perfect mulch. Fortunately going to collect it is the perfect excuse to visit our "secret beach" on the Strait of Gibraltar, and have a quick dip. The 16th century Tower of Guadelmesi is a 20 minute drive (not for the faint hearted!) or a couple of hours' hike from our place through the military zone. Now marked as part of the Camino de Santiago, it is an impressive part of the coast with Morocco as a backdrop. 🇪🇸La jardinería sin excavación requiere una tonelada de material orgánico que simplemente no tenemos, por lo que las algas lavadas son el mantillo perfecto. Afortunadamente ir a recogerla es la excusa perfecta para visitar nuestra “playa secreta” en el Estrecho de Gibraltar, y darnos un chapuzón rápido. La Torre de Guadelmesi del siglo 16, está a 20 minutos en auto (¡no para los débiles de corazón!) o a un par de horas de caminata desde nuestro lugar a través de la zona militar. We had our first electric hiring guest who, due to such a lack of demand, got his 8 day hire for under 30€ - in total!! He made the most of free charging on the beach and @base and couldn't have been happier with his choice. We are thrilled that it is even possible to rent electric, but guess this ridiculous offer will only last as long as the scepticism... Since we got our MG4 EV, we have been surprised how many charging stations there are, and how long the range lasts. Anyway the need to plan our longer trips slightly in advance adds an element of adventure and surprise for us rather than an inconvenience....having to stop and have lunch with the petrol money while the car charges hardly seems like a hardship. There are lots of concerns about the batteries, contamination etc, but with solar powered charging and the amount we use it, we feel the investment was more than worth it and will bring us to 0 emissions within just a few years. The batteries will just get added to our solar system once they are no longer strong enough for the car (which could be decades with good care). Safari on our doorstep! An Iberian False Smooth Snake - Macroprotodon brevis - eating an Iberian 3 toed skink... Quite a sight. Not a big snake but impressive all the same.
