Córdoba: A Centre of Learning in Andalucia
In the heart of Andalucia, Córdoba is a captivating city celebrated not only for its architectural wonders but also as a historic epicentre of intellectual and cultural achievement.

In 10th and 11th centuries, Cordoba was a centre of learning in Al-Andalus. Scholars created a hub of knowledge that laid the foundation for the Renaissance.

Thomas Hardy’s Wessex: The Literary Landscape of Dorset

NEW BLOG ON THE WEBSITE

Thomas Hardy is one of England’s most celebrated literary figures. He transformed the rural landscapes of Dorset into the fictional realm of Wessex, intertwining the forces of nature, fate, and human emotion into masterpieces which have stood the test of time.
In works such as Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Far from the Madding Crowd, and The Mayor of Casterbridge, Hardy’s meticulous descriptions of his homeland bring to life not just the people but also the fields, villages, and heathlands that dominate the region. For Hardy, Dorset was more than a mere setting; it was a character in its own right, shaping the destinies of the people who lived within its boundaries.

This is one of the reasons TOMA & COE chose Dorset as the location for their second writers’ retreat. This is a landscape in which you can escape the noise of everyday life and allow yourself to connect with your inner voice, ideas and writing.

Both the hosts of the Dorset Writers Retreat — Sunday Times Bestselling authors Joanna Quinn and Manni Coe — have a deep connection with the area. Indeed, their works — fiction and non-fiction — are based there, and with such a strong association between literature and the county, it is a natural location for an inspirational retreat.

The venue is the superb - a perfect base for 4 days of creative workshops, woodland walks and wellbeing activities in their 17 acres of rewilded gardens, meadows, river and lake.

I had to blink twice to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Today, we were on a reccie checking out a hotel we will start using next year for our Camino groups. We’ll be taking them a little off-track but today convinced me that we made the right decision.

When we walked up to the Fuente del Rey gardens, I could hardly believe my eyes. They are sumptuous, pristine and grand and sit nestled into a corner of the town that beggars belief.

So glad to finally have Priego de Córdoba on our radar as we know our guests will fall in love with it.

Why Visiting Andalucía Outside of Summer is the Best Choice
When most people think of Andalucía, their minds immediately drift to sun-drenched beaches, flamenco rhythms, and endless summer days. However, for those in the know, the true magic of Andalucía reveals itself outside the busy summer months. Visiting in autumn, winter, or spring offers a more authentic experience, where the region’s charm, natural beauty, and rich culture come alive in ways that often go unnoticed during the peak season.

Andalucia is a hotspot for tourists in the summer, but we know the best times to visit Andalucia are outside of summer. Discover why.

has long been a TOMA & COE favourite but when it came in at No. 18 in the we decided it was time to revisit.

We woke up to the dreamscape of mist filling the valleys that separates Vejer de la Frontera from the Atlantic coast. You can see and feel the sea here. This place restores the soul and doesn’t break the bank. It was the only 2 Star ⭐️ ⭐️ to make it onto the list. It reminds us that luxury doesn’t come in stars. It is more to do with unique experiences, hospitality, unique charm and originality. Vejer is unique and the Califa is unique within it.

The late and brilliant travel writer Jan Morris called Vejer “perhaps the most spectacular of all Spanish villages” and we tend to agree with her. A night here is like a week elsewhere.

Huge congratulations to the entire team. Thank you for the gorgeous room and the cheeky bottle of cava 🍾

Onwards and upwards! We will continue to use Hotel Califa in our bespoke itineraries and look forward to sharing the dream with our guests and clients. ❤️

Wrapped around the crown of a hill in the Montilla-Moriles wine region in Córdoba there is a town called Aguilar de la Frontera. In the middle of that town there is a palace that has been in the same family for generations. When you enter, you walk into the family’s treasured history and witness untouched Andalucia firsthand. The building shines bright with impeccable restoration and careful maintainance.

So, why did we go last night? Because was giving a “Cata” or wine tasting to a limited number of expectant guests. We sat with a family from the Dominican Republic. 🇩🇴 Aguilar de la Frontera suddenly felt international, partly due to Mara’s wine choices; rather than plumping for the obvious (and fabulous) local wines, she went further afield to Montepulciano and surprised us at the end with a Moscato d’Asti. Paired with cheeses from Andalucia and one of the best tapas I’ve ever tasted - a deconstructed croqueta with a truffle cheese and crunchy panko.

Combine this with an amazing playlist lightly filling the background with classy vibes, a splattering of light rain to clear the air, long shadows of magnolia and orange trees thrown by candlelight and what do you get?

Pretty much the most perfect night out you could ever dream of.

Thank you for your exquisite taste and style.
