The warm sunshine of a late October afternoon brought plenty of activity beside pools in the granite landscape near Malpartida de Cáceres yesterday: egg-laying Western Willow Spreadwings (Lestes viridis) and basking Spiny-footed Lizard (Acanthodactylus erythrurus) and Geniez’s Wall Lizard (Podocarcis virescens).

I found another Aquatic Warbler this morning, at a different site from my sightings a few days ago: a bit closer to home!

Over the last few years I have spent time in late August to search at dawn for the rare Aquatic Warbler in the rice fields of central Extremadura. This is Europe’s rarest passerine with a small breeding population mainly in Belarus (where I watched them in 2017) and Poland. They migrate through Iberia to wintering quarters in West Africa. Two years ago I found my first in . And this morning, in the same area and accompanied by my brother and niece, we had excellent views of two birds, including a bird preening on a reed and also feeding on exposed mud in the rice crop.

The last two days have been challenging in terms of the weather with strong cold westerly winds and heavy rain showers. Notwithstanding the weather, my clients have been wonderfully cheerful and the birds have been great, with a nice mixture of winter visitors still around (such as a fine Pied Wagtail Motacilla alba yarrelli - always a joy to find in Extremadura), along with spring arrivals such as Woodchat Shrike, and resident species such as Spanish Eagle, both bustards, both sandgrouse, Stone Curlew etc: all within a radius of 30 kilometres from home.
