Can Vaqueret - holiday home on Mallorca Can Vaqueret is a large, detached holiday home located in a quiet, hilly part in the South-East of M Escape for a week. For a relaxing holiday for two.

Or with a group of six. Or just by yourself. To finally read that book which has been waiting for you for some time. because you didn't have the time. Or to write that book, without being constantly disturbed by your iPhone or Blackberry. Go for walks on the Serra de Tramuntana. Play eighteen holes on the golf course practically around the corner. Or buy the world's best wine directly from the far

mer in the next valley and taste it when the crickets chirp. And all that within two hours flight from Amsterdam, including siesta.

A great way to spend your morning is browsing one of the island's rastros (flea markets), at several points on different days, especially Friday through Sunday. The most popular is the Mercadillo de Palma, held Saturday mornings on Avinguda Gabriel Alomar y Villalonga.

Review March 2016: "We are a family of four, two adults and two children of around ten years. We came to Can Vaqueret for the first time, enjoying the place for a week in late March 2016. Temperatures were around 16-21 degrees Celsius, roughly eight drops of rain,- once.
The house is located in a beautiful valley half way between Cala d'Or and Felanitx. You will most probably need a car. A very narrow private path leads from the main road to the grounds and the finca. We enjoyed the tranquillity, only two buildings exist in the vicinity. We never felt disturbed in any way. The building itself is very spacious and has all the amenities one could wish for. Exceptionally clean and cleverly furnished. The view from the masters bedroom towards the sea at Cala d'Or is exceptionally beautiful. Two outside terraces with sun (and shade respectively) throughout the whole day cater for both sun-lovers and redheads (like dad).
The area around the house is of typical Mallorcan character. Expect stones and reddish brown soil. Still a lot of trees and many pots with plants. The children loved walking up the path towards the next patch with Eve and Elvis (residential donkeys).
We very much enjoyed playing table tennis and ring toss, rackets, balls, rings etc. all readily available. And there's of course the outside barbecue which was in daily use.
It was too chilly for the well-sized outdoor pool which is (- due to local laws - not set in stone but a (huge) fast set pool) located a few steps away from the house. The kids loved it nevertheless. We reckon this will be a regular meeting point during hotter periods for sure.
The sun rising in the morning just outside your window - that was simply gorgeous. There are (silent) air conditioning devices in all three bedrooms, with good heating and cooling capabilities. Radiators are installed in all rooms of the house, powerful enough to create a cosy atmosphere (needed only in winter and spring times we presume).
We rarely left the grounds, Can Vaqueret with all its beauty really invites you to stay. We will most certainly come again in the near future. (And so do you if you got to know it.) Thank you very much, Marise."

Gato d’Ametlles (typical Mallorcan Almond Cake):

250 grams of icing sugar, 8 egg yolks and whites separated, zest of one lemon, ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (or 1 vanilla pod), 250 grams of finely ground almonds, oil to grease the tin, icing sugar for the top.

Mix the icing sugar with egg yolks until smooth, add the lemon zest and vanilla. Stir in the ground almonds. Whip up the egg whites until stiff, add to the bowl and fold into the mix until even. Put in a greased baking tin and bake in a pre heated oven - 350 C (180 F) for 55-60 mins. When cool sprinkle with icing sugar and serve.

Santueri Castle sits on top of a rocky outcrop some 475 metres above sea level. It is a stunning, well preserved castle with remarkable views of the south east of Mallorca and the Cabrera Islands on a clear day. The present walls date from the 14th century but a fortification has existed here since Roman times.

Cycling on Mallorca: there is a beautiful climb to a mountain top monastery. Steep throughout, with gradients upto 15% the 5 km road winds its way up from the outskirts of Felanitx to the monastery at the top. Fantastic views in all directions helps to take the mind off the constant climbing and hairpins . There is a cafe at the top and 360 degree views of the island.

Coarse bread rubbed with tomato or garlic and then bathed in olive oil, is common to all the Mediterranean cultures. On the island of Majorca, it is known as pa amb oli, bread and oil. Looks simple, but tastes great!

Recetas Sobrasada de Mallorca

On the 17th of October there is a Sobrassada Fair in Campos, where you can taste some of Mallorca's finest sausage meat. Sobrassada is a Mallorcan sausage which looks like a fat chorizo. In fact, it is more like sausage meat spread than an actual sausage, and locals like to spread it on bread and drizzle with a little olive oil.

The Santueri Castle lies 7km from Felanitx, on a high plateau whose peak rises to 475m. Its strategic location gives views of the villages of Portocolom, Portopetro, a wide coastal stretch of the Migjorn (the south of Mallorca), and on clear days, the silhouette of the island of Cabrera stands out.

Review June 2013:
Can Vaqueret is a very luxurious, completely renovated farmhouse. It has all the charm of old Mallorca combined with a light, spacious and fully equipped holiday home. The house is the perfect base for day-trips to the numerous secluded and charming beaches and a string of little bay side harbour villages, with excellent restaurants. All within a quarter of an hours drive. I thoroughly enjoyed my sun-drenched stay and secretly fell in love with Can Vaqueret and the Island.

A beautiful place to visit. Antoni Gaudi was involved in a renovation in the early 1900's - the effect of which you can still see - but he abandoned his job in 1914 after an argument with the contractor! Too bad.
