“In 1961, my father and my uncle set off in their MG’s for the Costa Brava” says Giles Boothman, co-founder of Mas Moli Petit. “They were attracted by the same rugged coastline as we enjoy today, sandy beaches, chiringuitos and carefree days in the sun. They camped on the beach in L’Estartit which is not too far from Mas Moli Petit.”

In 1959, Elizabeth Taylor and Katharine Hepburn came to the Costa Brava for the filming of “Suddenly, Last Summer”. Some of the scenes were shot not too far from Mas Moli Petit. This helped to put the Costa Brava on the map as one of the world’s most desirable and fashionable beach destinations albeit still relatively undiscovered. In celebration of the 65th anniversary of the filming, we will be releasing some of our own footage from that era over the next few days.

Did you know that only 30 metres from Mas Molí Petit there are some pre-Romanesque ruins to explore? In our neighbouring sister property, Mas Molí Grand there are ruins of a medieval castle, a monastery and a pre- Romanesque village. The excavation is still in process and it has been exciting to see history unfold. In the last century both properties used the water from the River Manol to drive the olive mills and the river must have been the original attraction for these early settlements.

We are all ready for Christmas at Mas Moli Petit. Roaring fires at night, frosty mornings but bright sunny days with trips to the beach and outdoor dining. Maybe some tennis in the evenings on our floodlight court then a cosy evening with a film in the home cinema. Fully booked this year but currently available for 2025

Anyone for Tennis? Mas Moli Petit was delighted to host a photo shoot for Ellesse earlier this summer. Our lovely, all weather, floodlit tennis court makes the perfect backdrop for that green Wimbledon look. Thank you to the Ellesse team for coming. It was a fun few days.

The El Bulli story This week we went to El Bulli museum on the site of where the world’s most celebrated restaurant operated until 2011, only 40 minutes from Mas Moli Petit. It is a fascinating story of how a location transformed from a beach bar and mini golf club to a simple restaurant to Restaurant Magazine’s most highly rated restaurant of all time. At its height the restaurant had over 2 million booking requests a year. But it had capacity for only 50 diners and operated only 6 months of the year meaning that less than 10,000 covers were available. Usually with such a strong brand, one would expect a sale, an expansion or a franchising arrangement but this would have compromised standards and so the decision was made to close the restaurant and go out on a high. The dishes created by Ferran Adria were groundbreaking which resulted in its worldwide fame and the endeavour has given the region an amazing diaspora of innovative chefs with great values that will endure.

It’s already starting to get warm at MAS MOLI PETIT - it will be 22 degrees today. Our roof terrace is a delightful place to soak up some early Spring sunshine, for al fresco dining and perhaps a spot of early morning yoga. The birds are very chatty at the moment. We still have some availability for a long weekend in March if you fancy a bit of time in the sun
