“In 1961, my father and my uncle set off in their MG’s for the Costa Brava” says Giles Boothman, co-founder of Mas Moli Petit. “They were attracted by the same rugged coastline as we enjoy today, sandy beaches, chiringuitos and carefree days in the sun. They camped on the beach in L’Estartit which is not too far from Mas Moli Petit.”

In 1959, Elizabeth Taylor and Katharine Hepburn came to the Costa Brava for the filming of “Suddenly, Last Summer”. Some of the scenes were shot not too far from Mas Moli Petit. This helped to put the Costa Brava on the map as one of the world’s most desirable and fashionable beach destinations albeit still relatively undiscovered. In celebration of the 65th anniversary of the filming, we will be releasing some of our own footage from that era over the next few days.

Did you know that only 30 metres from Mas Molí Petit there are some pre-Romanesque ruins to explore? In our neighbouring sister property, Mas Molí Grand there are ruins of a medieval castle, a monastery and a pre- Romanesque village. The excavation is still in process and it has been exciting to see history unfold. In the last century both properties used the water from the River Manol to drive the olive mills and the river must have been the original attraction for these early settlements.

Another fabulous sunset this evening. The climate at Mas Moli Petit could not be better at this time of year - perfect temperatures and although it can get quite hot in the day a dip in the lovely pool is so refreshing and we sometime have those lovely sea breezes to keep you cool at night. In fact we haven’t needed to have the air conditioning yet this summer!

The beautiful gardens of Mas Moli Petit.

At Mas Moli Petit we are fortunate not only to have our own water supply from the underwater spring deep below the old mill but also to be right on the bank of the River Manol. This creates a micro climate in the lower part of the garden where we have the pool, the barbecue and summer eating area. The flowers bloom for an unusually long period and we love seeing the different varieties thrive through the seasons.

Wild Flower Exhibition in Bascara, 4 June.

You often find some understated but intriguing local festivals in Alt Ampurdan like the Wild Flower Exhibition in Bascara or the Rabbit and Artisan Festival every April in Vilafant, our home village, not to mention this year’s ongoing Dali festivals to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the opening of Cas Dali in Port Lligat. Yesterday we stumbled across the Wild Flower Festival in Bascara, only 15 minutes from MMP. Now in its 32nd year, you can sense the pride of the town’s exhibitors and a little bit of local competition. This year the theme was based around the sea and the fishing heritage of the region but wild flowers feature in all the exhibits. Bascara is a beautiful little town with a 13th century church overlooking the River Fluvia on the old road between Figueres and Girona. It has a population of under 1,000 people so this exhibition which runs for one day only captures the hearts and minds of the local population. Love it!

Can Xabanet - best restaurant in Banyoles.

In our final instalment of our best local restaurant guide (or Season 1 at least of these suggestions) we move inland to the beautiful lakeside town of Banyoles, only 25 minutes from Mas Moli Petit. A stone’s throw from the lake shore you find the very special Can Xabanet. Founded in 1947, it must be the best place to eat in Banyoles. A great Spanish menu with plenty of tasty tapas and an abundance of local ingredients. Can Xabanet has come to Mas Moli Petit a couple of times to cater for us at special events and we could not recommend them strongly enough. Such attention to detail, great flavours, great flair. Pep Xabanet himself graced us with his presence and will often be seen chatting to guests in the restaurant. (PS in Catalan the X is pronounced as “sch”). A cycle round the lake or a dip or even a swim across the lake is a great way to build up a good appetite for that lovely lunch.

La Pelosa - definitely the best chiringuito on the Costa Brava.

This is a fabulous place for a long lunch in a lovely little cove with crystal blue waters. The paella is outstanding but all seafood options are also amazing. Crab, squid, octopus, local fish plus some meat options. La Pelosa is best reached by boat. You can also drive there but as it is in the Natural Reserve of Cap de Creus, you need to have a reservation in the high summer months to access it via the dirt track road. If you come by boat the restaurant will organise your mooring in the cove and ferry you to the restaurant in a small dinghy. When it gets busier in the height of the summer season and you haven’t been able to reserve a table, they can still bring the paella out to your boat! No boat? Mas Moli Petit can organise one for you quite easily with or without a skipper and then you can enjoy some snorkelling in one of the calitas (little coves) before a fab lunch at La Pelosa. The restaurant is actually only a few hundred metres from where El Bulli was based until 2011 and although they are totally different propositions, El Bulli was here for a reason and you have the most wonderful setting on the Costa Brava. La Pelosa has a cool hippy rockstar feel to it - like it was founded in the sixties and Mick Jagger and Warren Beatty were regulars and we are pretty sure that if this restaurant was on Pamplona/ St. Tropez beach, you would have no chance of getting a booking. In fact, La Pelosa started as a simple chiringuito (beach bar and restaurant) in 2005 and has been going strong ever since. Great day out!

El Celler de Can Roca - best restaurant in Spain?

Today we had the most fantastic lunch at El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, only 20 my minutes from Mas Moli Petit. The larger tasting menu, El Menu Festival comprises 15 mini courses and 13 micro appetisers. Although that sounds a lot, each course is the most delicate sensation of the most outstanding culinary experience you can imagine. Allow 4 hours and leave time to savour the most delicious sensations you could ever enjoy. The bad news: there is normally a 1 year lead time to get a table; the good news is that it is quite easy to get a table through the waiting list system - we only booked 2 weeks ago and if you are flexible on the dates, there is a good chance of being able to get a reservation.

We also enjoyed lunch at Arzak in San Sebastián in the Basque County earlier this month. This would also claim to be the best restaurant in Spain. Which is best? It’s hard to say as we loved them both.

Mas Moli Petit is perfectly located between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava. Both are within easy reach by car. So you can spend the mornings hiking and cool off in the sea in the afternoon. We have a great view from the front of the house of Canigo which rises to almost 2800 metres. It’s actually on the French side of the Pyrenees and you can see the snowy peaks even in May. .tourism-canigo.com

We love the local fruit and vegetable market in nearby Figueres which runs 3 times a week. Saturday is a great day for stocking up as the Pescadería in the market square are very stocked up with the morning’s catch and you can also have a browse in the vintage market in La Rambla. And then come back to Mas Moli Petit to eat fresh fish and seafood from the Barbecue. A great way to spend a Saturday.

At Mas Moli Petit we are lucky to be close to a number of excellent golf courses including PGA Catalunya with its twin 18 hole courses. It is consistently ranked as Spain’s No. 1 golf resort.

Despite this it is surprisingly good value and we can arrange special packages, club and buggy hire. We also have Torremirona and Perelada less than 15 minutes away. It’s great to be able to combine part of the day on the golf course with the sea, the mountains and the many other activities around.

At Mas Moli Petit you can satisfy all your golf ambitions whilst others in your group have fun at the beach or in the mountains.

Our Masia, a converted olive mill, is one of the most beautiful properties in the area and the interior has been carefully designed in the most perfect setting sleeping up to 18 people. The extensive grounds of the property are extremely private and there is perimeter fencing encompassing the entire site of over 2 hectares. The facilities include an all year tennis court (with floodlights), outdoor pool, outdoor kitchen and dining area, home cinema, pool/ billiards room, gym, roof terrace, childrens’ playground, and extensive gardens. There is Wi-Fi in all bedrooms, most common areas and the pool and outdoor dining area. The location is outstanding – we are right next to the River Manol and surrounded by luscious countryside but in sight of the Pyrenees and only 20 minutes from the coast. Figueres is only a few kilometres away and the road and rail connections could not be better.

You will not find a better place to enjoy your vacations
