Albertia Forest, Legutio, Gorbeialdea 🌳✨
In this forest, the pollarded beech trees reflect an ancestral technique known as pollarding, practised in the Basque Country. 🌲 Our ancestors did not fell the trees, but modified them to use their wood in a sustainable way, especially for charcoal kilns and domestic use. A true naturalist heritage. 🌿
💡 The hollows in the trees also serve as a refuge for local fauna: birds such as the tawny owl and the wren (txepetxa), and mammals such as the marten and the genet. 🦉

The eguzkilore is the symbol that best represents the sun in Basque mythology. It is placed on the doors of the houses to defend them from lightning , evil spirits , witches , etc. . Some say that witches returning from the Akelarres, when they see the eguzkilore in the morning mist, run away confusing it with the sun. Others think that the witches can not enter the houses until they have removed all the leaves of the thistle , while they are doing this work dawns and together with the appearance of the sun flee to their cave
