UNESCO is seriously concerned about the protection of World Heritage site of the Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela (Ethiopia) following reports on the expansion of the conflict to the area. We call for the respect of all relevant obligations under international law in ensuring the protection of the Outstanding Universal Value and legacy of this precious site.

zannparker I can’t believe I was able to witness this ceremony a few days ago. Literally “once in a lifetime” opportunity!!

This is a ceremony that only takes place once in every 40 years. It is a “passage of rites” ritual where the previous elders relinquish their powers and pass them onto newly appointed elders.

After the king and chief, the elders are the most important people within the Arbore tribe. Once appointed, they make all the important decisions and will remain in power for the next 40 years.

I look forward to going through my photos and videos once I get home, and being to really share this unbelievable experience with the world.
