The use of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3).
What is Calcium Carbonate also known as (CaCO3).
This is a filler often utilized by mattress factories in the production of polyurethane foams. The filler allows the substitution of part of the polymeric agents.
CaCO3 composition was found to give 18.54% to 23.49% in the reduction of cost during production. For this reason alone, everyone in the industry is enticed to use this chemical filler. In fact, every single foam company in Ethiopia uses this filler.
What this filler does is artificially mimic dimensional stability and hardness to the foams. This is very tricky for the uninformed buyer. Most customers will only see the price point; however, the quality is often overlooked because it feels and looks just like any other foam.
However, based on experimental data, it has been observed that the use of commercial (CaCO3) utilized in the industry causes the increase of hysteresis (the phenomenon in which the value of a physical property is diminished) causing permanent deformations and damaging the quality of the final product.
At the Rainbow Foam Laboratory, the physico-chemical analyses of flexible polyurethane foams with different contents of (CaCO3) were performed. After submitting the foam to morphological analysis (a method for exploring possible solutions to a multi-dimensional, non-quantified complex problem), we were able to determine and verify the alterations provoked by the progressive introduction of this filler causes poor quality foam and is also hazardous to the human health. It is documented that sleeping on a mattress with excess amounts of (CaCO3) causes asthma to develop especially in younger children.
