Fichee Chembelala — July 13

Fichee Chembalala Celebrations.
Is a two–day celebration dating back thousands of years, which the Sidama people observe to usher in New Year. The festivities took place at the Sidama Cultural Centre, with the usual flair and bang that accompanies this holiday. From the celebrations at the shores of Awassa to the elderly Ayantos who decide the date of the celebration, there is plenty to see and enjoy during this remarkable longstanding celebration.

Ethiopia is one of the world’s rich biodiversity countries and it deserves attention, regionally and globally. It has a very diverse set of ecosystems ranging from humid forests and extensive wetlands to the desert of the Afar depression. This is due to the variation in climate, topography and vegetation.

Ethiopia is one of the twelve known ancient countries for crop plant diversities in the world and has valuable reserves of crop genetic diversity, of which 11 cultivated crops have their centre of diversity in the country. The extensive and unique conditions in the highlands of the country have contributed to the presence of a large number of endemic species.

The flora of Ethiopia is very diverse with an estimated number between 6,500 and 7,000 species of higher plants, of which about 15 percent are endemic. It has been said that Ethiopia is the fifth largest floral country in tropical Africa. Both Teff – a durable grain –, and coffee – Ethiopia’s trademark crops – are grown in the highlands.

The Rise of Aksum

Zeinab Badawi travels to the little-visited country of Eritrea and neighbouring Ethiopia, to chart the rise of the Kingdom of Aksum. Described as one of the four greatest civilisations of the ancient world, Zeinab examines archaeological remains - in both countries - dating from many hundreds of years before Christ. She explains how the Kings of Aksum grew rich and powerful from their control of the Red Sea trade and how they were one of the first civilisations that officially embraced Christianity in the 4th century. Zeinab also discovers why the Queen of Sheba and the Sacred Ark of the Covenant are so critical to the story of Aksum.

Ashenda Festival (August 22 – 24)

Ashandye or Ashenda, one of the great festivals which are unique for Lasta Lalibela and further north like Sekota and Tigray. It is known by Ashenda throughout Tigray, Shadey in Wag Hemra and by Solel in Raya Kobo.

It is an event most yearned by girls. Young girls dressed in beautiful traditional outfits and in small groups, go from house to house singing and dancing.

These lovely girls putting on their best apparel and personality celebrate the occasion continuously for three days.
