In addition to the usual Islamic holidays that are evidently celebrated in Ethiopia, Shawwal Eid is a unique religious festival held especially in and around Harar.
Celebrated on the 8th day of Shuwalid month that comes after Ramadan in the Islamic calendar, Shuwalid , among the Harari is celebrated in the sense of providing chances for women to compensate for their 6 days break through the fasting season and celebrate their Eid with the entire community as the cultural feat.
Therefore the celebration proceeds on time, and the Shuwal Zikr starts at the most popular venues for three nights followed by a nonstop 24-hour celebration on the last day. Hararis from every corner and neighborhood gathers to attend the festival dressed in colorful costumes.
The platform is also assumed as a conducive venue where couples throw eyes at each other, for marriage, perhaps the secular virtue bestows on Shuwalid astonishingly. The Harari youth adore Shuwalid more than any other holiday.
