The Ethiopian wolf is a canine that originates from the Ethiopian Highlands. It is also known as the Simien jackal & Simien fox.

Ethiopia's mountains and highlands are home to these mysterious creatures. The two national parks of the Simien Mountains and the Bale Mountains, whose contoured landscapes include biodiverse forests on the lower slopes and grassy plains higher up, are home to the largest populations.

Due to their gregarious nature, wolves typically live in packs. Giant mole rats and common grass rats are the majority of their prey, and they typically hunt alone. The wolves have to be very cunning to catch one of the enormous mole rats because they only come out of their holes for 20 minutes a day.

High volcanic plateaus have significantly shaped the Ethiopian landscape. Low-lying desert encloses it on three sides. The plateau averages a height of more than 2000 meters. Additionally, there are more than 20 mountains higher than 4000 meters, Simien Mountains rise to . The Rift (Rift Valley) divides the Ethiopian highlands. This starts at the Red Sea, travels through Africa, and only ends in Mozambique. Southwest Ethiopia features savannas and rainforests in addition to mountainous regions. Mountains are the source of many rivers, including the most well-known, the Blue Nile River. There are also some highly fertile regions with lovely lakes and valleys.

Zegegnas (as the peninsula's residents refer to themselves) generally believe the concept that natural was bestowed upon them through the saint's prayer, basing this belief on what is described in the gedel (Miracle of Abune Betre Maryam). In consequence, the miracle saint gathered a sizable following both on his journey to and after arriving in the peninsula, which was at the time a desolate land. The saint was concerned about the matter and prayed to God about how to feed those souls as his disciples continued to dramatically expand as the Miracle persisted. Then, in response to his prayers, Abune Betre Maryam received a directive from telling him to cut his shaft into three parts and send it to his disciple, Bertholomewos, to plant. Coffee, Gesho, and Lemon sprang out of the abun's miraculous stick as a result of Abune Betre Maryam carrying out the task as instructed by God. Accepting this custom wholeheartedly is challenging. However, it is plausible to infer from the existing materials that Abune Betre Maryam is responsible for the discovery and introduction of to the peninsula.

“It was our first time visiting Ethiopia for two weeks and Tanian Tours helped make the brief trip seem like a month-long ordeal.

Every step of the trip is filled with interesting activities, stories, and history lessons. We made friends with the locals, enjoyed the stunning scenery, ate delectable injera food, trekked the Simien Mountains, took a boat tour on Lake Tana, enjoyed the blue nile waterfalls (which were flowing with water), visited the Gondar palaces, Danakil Depression, and Debre Libanos monastery on a daytrip (recommended for birding & gorge scenery).

Due to the Tanian staff's strong local connections, they showed us the most authentic locations and, with the help of their fantastic multilingual guides (Alex & Bira), we always had a translator available, making communication much simpler.
We'll see you again soon, and we'll bring our university friends and families along.”

GELADA BABOONS

These highland monkeys, also known as gelada baboons and bleeding-heart baboons, are highly social, occupying herds that are several hundred or even 1,000 strong. Found only in Ethiopia, this iconic species is a big tourism draw for Simien Mountains National Park, along with other endemic but threatened wildlife like the Ethiopian wolf and the Walia ibex. Geladas are unique in the monkey world.

Their diet is almost entirely grass, but they have impressive canine teeth — especially the males, who rely on their fearsome fangs not to eat but to signal dominance or to fight. They are terrestrial, or ground dwellers rather than tree dwellers. When feeding, they use a "shuffle gait," meaning they move along seated, without lifting their feet. To keep safe at night, they sleep on cliffside ledges where hyenas and leopards will not be able to get them. ©️awf.org

Found only in Ethiopia, this iconic species is a big tourism draw for Simien Mountains National Park, along with other endemic but threatened wildlife like the Ethiopian wolf and the Walia ibex. Geladas are unique in the monkey world. Their diet is almost entirely grass, but they have impressive canine teeth — especially the males, who rely on their fearsome fangs not to eat but to signal dominance or to fight. They are terrestrial, or ground dwellers rather than tree dwellers. When feeding, they use a "shuffle gait," meaning they move along seated, without lifting their feet.
